CATHOLIC Homeschool

July 14, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Homeschool Freebies, Homeschooling

imageThis conference is an answer to many prayers.  I had been offering support to a friend who was inspired to coordinated a local homeschooling conference.  We became a bit deflated when we realized that the planning today would not yield a conference until a couple years down the road.  Within a day of this realization came an email, an answer to prayers – a nearby CATHOLIC homeschooling conference.

Praise GOD!  I’m not willing to pass up spiritual opportunities that are offered in my backyard.  My spiritual bank is full, thanks be to God, but I know how suddenly it can be emptied.  I trust that this conference will yield a nice reserve in my spiritual bank.  All food for the soul is welcome!

I’m blessed to have a husband who supports, encourages and raises me up.  Dad will be managing the home front with five kids while coordinating their participation at a City-meet and graduation party.  Thank you Lord for his humble headship of our family.

I pray that this Catholic homeschooling conference will be fruitful to His Church Militant who have chosen the call to homeschool.  I pray that I be inspired to better live out my call, to live as the Holy Family lived – a life of JOYful sacrifice.  Lastly, I pray for graces for all the husbands who lead their families to know and follow God’s will.  Cause of our JOY, pray for us!

Summer Birthday Gift

July 12, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Gifts, Summer

There’s been a bubble craze in my home since this episode.  We have been blowing bubbles almost everyday and couldn’t resist sharing some fun.

I was inspired last year by this display of homemade bubbles.  (Yes, it usually takes me that long to get moving on my inspiration.  What can I say, it’s one of my many crosses.)

Bubble Bucket

I created this Bubble Bucket as a present for a lil’ guy.

~~~
My Bubble Bucket Included:
image
  • White 2 gallon bucket (found at Lowes for $3.27.  I personalized this bucket with paint pens and embellished wit with ribbons.)
image
  • Bubbles (found at Wal-Mart for $3.00)
image
  • Joy Detergent (found at Wal-Mart for $2.97.  Add a couple of squirts to the bubble solution to help make the bubbles last.)
bubble wand v2
  • Bubble wand (Made out of 1 wooden dowel, cut in half.  Attach an eye screw to the top of each wooden dowel.  Thread 2 cotton strings through the eye screws.  One string will be shorter than the other.   Tie the string on each side.  Be sure to attached a washer to the longer string.)
~~~

Directions:bubble solution

  1. Pour some bubble solution into the bucket.  A thin layer of bubbles will suffice.
  2. Add some Joy to the solution.  You do not need to mix.
  3. Dip the bubble wand string into the solution.  Avoid creating suds in the solution.
  4. Pull out the bubble wand with dowels together.  Slowly separate the two dowels and blow or use the wind.  Bring the two dowels together to detach the bubble from the wand.

Here is a demonstration.

Little Flowers Retreat ~ All for Jesus, through Mary!

July 9, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Little Flowers, Retreat, Summer

2011-06-22

This is the Little Flowers room, ready for the 2011 Retreat.  Details on the first half of the meeting can be seen here.

We attended Mass at noon.

P6220582

We ate lunch and had some free time while the workers set up the next station, tie-dye.

Each girl brought a white shirt from home.  I had white handkerchiefs on hand for those who forgot their shirt.  Rose and I prepared the shirts while the girls ate lunch.

The girls were eager to create a masterpiece for the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  They worked in two groups of 3-4.  My two helpers each ran their own station.  My remaining mom helper conducted story time in the room for all the girls in waiting.

LittLL

Next, was an outdoor rotation — bubbles.  I had planned the second half of the retreat to consist of a rotation between outdoor activities and indoor crafts.

  My plan was not His plan!

Father and the seminarians were passing by and I invited them to give the girls a bubble demonstration.  They jumped on the invitation and were delighted to share in some recreation.  The girls were thrilled to have the clerics as playmates.

Fr. M, Mr. M, and Mr. O became bubble pros.

2011-06-222

The gracefilled bubbles were such a hit with the clerics that I invited them to give another demonstration for the girls.  Fr. M volunteered to hold the sand bucket before I could announce the object of the game.

The seminarians were beyond excited to have their shot at Father.

Too bad the water wasn’t more refreshing.  It was poured into the buckets at the beginning of the day and the 90+ degree temp.  brought the buckets of water to a near boil.  The clerics never grumbled about the water temp.  I made the discovery on my own when I went to re-fill a bucket.

Small things for Jesus!

2011-06-223

Father had to leave to attend to his duties as Pastor.  He managed to sneak a water fight in prior to his farewell.

Father picked on Mr. O and Mr. M showed no mercy to Father.

2011-06-227

Father directed the seminarians to stay with the Little Flowers.

It was a blessing for the girls to see the clerics at play.

The girls got in on the water fun.  They even attacked the seminarians, just as Father did, after their competition.

2011-06-224

Mr. O graciously played along with the girls as they drenched him and Mr. M with water.  However, Mr. O couldn’t leave on that note.  He went for the water hose.  I gave him a little help.

I distracted the girls with a game of Simon-Says while Mr. O set his plan of attack.  The last call was, “Simon-says to turn around.”  Mr. O took his queue and blasted the girls.

It was just the refreshment that they needed.2011-06-225

The girls were exhausted and in need of a break.  They thanked Mr. O and Mr. M and excused themselves.

They were served a snack outdoors.  Then we discussed the Glorious Mysteries and prayed one decade of the Rosary.  The girls were to focus in on the most important part of the Hail Mary, the name of Jesus.  They practiced showing reverence and bowed when they heard the name of Jesus.

JOYfilledfamily

The girls were allowed free-time once they cleaned up.  The girls decided to take their free-time in doors.  We did not have enough time for my structured crafts that I had planned but the girls were given full reign of limited craft supplies.  The littlest Little Flower came up with craft that all the girls loved, pipe cleaner jewelry.  The girls used bright colored pipe cleaners and pony beads.  The big-sis helpers supervised and joined in on the crafting fun.

It was a blessed day for all.

I pray that the girls grow in virtue and seek to do all things For Jesus through Mary!

——

I received a beautiful consolation that same evening of the retreat.  My kids were all in bed and I sat downstairs with my feet up, ready to pass out, as I prayed and shared my day with Dad.   I got a call from a parent.  She had other business to discuss with me.  Just as we were about to say good-bye, she offered me a sweet story.  She said, “Before I go, I wanted to share with you what my LF did on the way home…She began to sing, “If you want to get to heaven be obedient.  If you want to get to heaven be obedient.” She song this line over and over.  She sang it to the tune of If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

I could hear the LF voice singing those sweet words in my head.  They were not my exact words from the retreat.  They were her inspired words, from her heart.  They filled me with thanksgiving and I gave praise to God.

The work I do is ALL FOR HIM.  The fruits that are made are ALL HIS.  The blessings I receive are returned to Our Blessed Mother, for her disposal.  Always, ALL FOR JESUS THROUGH MARY!

Camp Immaculate Heart came to a close on Saturday.  Dad and I are already brainstorming for next year’s camp.  Yes, that means that dad is planning to be gone for another week next year.  Camp Sacred Heart was a great blessing for Dad and I’m not going to stand in the way for additional blessings.  Deo gratias!

(To clarify, Camp Immaculate Heart is not much different than a normal day of homeschooling for my family.  Nonetheless, it’s amazing what a change in the name will do to morale.)

Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Bethlehem – Day 1

July 7, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Bethlehem

Day 1:  Mission San Juan Bautista to Salinas – 15 miles

The theme for Chartres 2011 was "The Gospel of Life." Each day of Pilgrimage had a sub-theme and a Patron Saint.  I adopted Chartres theme and Patron Saints.

On the first day of Pilgrimage, the patron saint was  Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the sub-theme was The Gospel of Life, a Gift of God.

image

This was a beautiful consolation for me since my family has an ever-growing devotion to Blessed Mother Teresa.  It confirmed that our participation in this pilgrimage was God’s will and that Bl. Mother Teresa was walking with us (interceding for us).

~~~
Rose and I woke up at 3am to pack the car and depart the house for our 2 hour drive to Mission San Juan Bautista.
We started the day with Mass at the Mission. Fr. L traveled over 2.5 hours to celebrate Mass for the pilgrims. We were warmly greeted by the beautiful Latin Mass community. They even provided us with breakfast prior to our first departure. It was a wonderful start of our journey.
“My God must be first served.”  ~St. Joan of Arc’s Motto
St.Joan of Arc3St. Joan of Arc
Traditional ~ May 31 – New ~ May 30
The life of Joan of Arc, who was born into a prosperous peasant family, took place in the context of the conflict between France and England known as the Hundred Years War. At the age of thirteen, "through the ‘voice’ of St. Michael the Archangel, Joan felt herself called by the Lord to intensify her Christian life and to act personally to free her people".
  She made a vow of virginity and redoubled her prayers, participating in sacramental life with renewed energy. "This young French peasant girl’s compassion and commitment in the face of her people’s suffering were made even more intense through her mystical relationship with God. One of the most original aspects of her sanctity was this bond between mystical experience and political mission". said Benedict XVI.
  Joan’s passion began on 23 May 1430 when she fell into the hands of her enemies at Compiegne and was taken to the city of Rouen. There a long and dramatic trial was held which concluded with her being condemned to death on 30 May 1431.
  Joan died at the stake on 30 May 1431, holding a crucifix in her hands and invoking the name of Jesus.
  "Joan saw in Jesus all the reality of the Church, the ‘Church triumphant’ in heaven and the ‘Church militant’ on earth. In her own words, ‘Our Lord and the Church are one’… "With her shining witness St. Joan of Arc invites us to the highest degree of Christian life, making prayer the motif of our days, having complete trust in achieving the will of God whatever it may be, living in charity without favouritisms or limitations, and finding in the Love of Jesus, as she did, a profound love for His Church".
Fleur di Lis
The Fleur di Lis was also introduced to the girls.  A Little Flower brought the banner that she created from the kit that she won from here.
Here are some of what the Fleur di Lis represents:
  • Joan of Arc carried a white banner that showed God blessing the French royal emblem, the fleur-de-lis, when she led French troops to victory over the English in support of the Dauphin, Charles VII, in his quest for the French throne.
  • The Roman Catholic Church ascribed the lily as the special emblem of the Virgin Mary.
  • Due to its three "petals," the fleur-de-lis has also been used to represent the Holy Trinity.
We were blessed by a visit from Fr. L.  He gave a brief talk on the Pope. He encouraged the girls to pray for Pope Benedict XVI on a daily basis but especially on the special anniversary of his priestly ordination.
Obedience
Painting by Howard Pyle of Joan of Arc titled:
Prayer for the Virtue of Obedience
Jesus, Almighty King of kings, You Who obeyed Your Father to the end, Teach me the meaning of obedience. My soul burns to comply to Your Will, Striving to charm Your Divinity. While my worldly nature seeks one way, My spiritual nature seeks another. Bless me with the strength to obey, That my soul may subdue both natures, Blending them as a fair aromatic bloom. I always seek favour in Your eyes, To always obey You until my last breath!
~~~

Fr. Lasance, Catholic Girl’s Guide

…Teach Obedience, dearest Jesus,
Such as was Thy daily food
In Thy toilsome earthly journey
From the cradle to the rood.
Teach Thy Heart, to me, dear Jesus,
Is my fervent, final prayer,
For all beauties and perfections
Are in full perfection there.

…Do you, dear child, remain always a docile, obedient daughter of your father and mother. Your fulfillment of the fourth commandment will be as a sweet odor before the Lord, and wall make you one day a partaker in the bliss of heaven.

We discussed the virtue of obedience. The virtue that was exemplified by St. Joan of Arc’s following of God’s will.

Here are some additional reflections that were shared with the girls. They come from Fr. Lasance Catholic Girl’s Guide.

At Nazareth a mirror bright

Stands before the Christian’s sight;

Look therein and you will see

How obedient you should be.

– To whom do you owe obedience? To your parents before everyone else, according to His example of whom we read: “He was subject to them.” Your parents are for you the representatives of God on earth. Therefore always pay heed to their exhortation, never grumble or make a pert answer. I have already said a great deal as to what your conduct to your parents should be, when I spoke about the fourth commandment.

– But mark this well: do not regard obedience as a painful necessity; consider it rather to be Christian virtue. Obedience of this nature has its root in humility; faith sanctifies it, and love renders it sweet. For it is only Christian obedience, the obedience which springs from lobe of God, that will remain with you through life, whatever may be your circumstances. On the other hand, obedience which arises from compulsion, human respect, or a desire to please, is merely external, and therefore of no value. Obedience of this nature will never last long, and will not bring you true peace of mind.

– What is obedience? It consists in subjecting our own will to the will of another. This most precious virtue is termed by St. Augustine “the mother and root of all virtues.” St. Bonaventure calls it “a ship, in which one sails to heaven.” Hence we learn that obedience is a virtue, indispensably necessary for everyone, but especially for children and young people; for obedience is order and order must prevail in every place where God is and where He reigns. Disobedience, the offspring of pride, kindled the flames of hell, and peoples its dread abode. In regard to this St. Bernard says; “Abolish disobedience, and you will abolish hell.” Obedience is, according to St. Francis of Sales a sweet virtue. He says: “He who rightly obeys will live aright; he will live sweetly, as does the child in the arms of its mother, free from anxiety and care.”

~~~
Craft
We made ribbon bracelets. We followed the directions posted here. We used pastel grosgrain ribbon and embellished the bracelet with a faux carnation flower (the flower that represents obedience).
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Composed by Louis, Bishop of Saint Dié
God, Who has given to Joan of Domremy to be valiant in the humble work of the house and the fields and generously faithful to all Your calls.
Grant to us, by her intercession, to accomplish with faith all the works of our lives and to serve You courageously in our labors on the land, that we may earn a place with Joan and all the saints of France, in the Kingdom of heaven. We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Celebrating the RED*WHITE*BLUE
July 6, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: July 4th
“We who by the grace of God are Catholics must steel ourselves for the battle we shall certainly have to fight to fulfill our program and to give our country, in the not too distant future, happier days and a morally healthy society. But to achieve this we need constant prayer to obtain from God that grace without which all our powers are useless.” ~ Blessed Pier Giorgio (whose feast day we celebrated on July 4)
Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Feast Day July 16
Taken from novenas published at EWTN and prepared by the Carmelite nuns of Carpineto Romano, Italy.
~~~

First Day – JULY 7    Mary, welcoming model
O Beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a pure virgin, assist us in our necessity! O Star of the Sea, help and protect us! Show us that you are our Mother!
(pause and mention petitions)
Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: The Annunciation (Lk 1: 26-38)

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Reflection: The Gospels begin by presenting Mary as a woman who embraces God’s plan. In an attitude of prayer, she listens, meditates, consents and answers "yes" to God who calls her. In a word she is welcoming. It is this welcoming that gives birth to Life in her. "And the Word was made flesh."

Prayer: Holy Mary, welcoming woman, lead us to imitate you so that every day we may give birth to Jesus in the situations of life where we find ourselves.
Holy Mary, welcoming woman, teach us to meditate the Word of God like you, so that at every moment of our lives we may welcome it and allow ourselves to be guided by it.
Holy Mary, flower of Carmel, hear our pleading.

My commitment is to read a page of the Gospel and reflect on it to try and discover what God wishes of me in my daily life.

~~~
Second Day – JULY 8    Mary, wonderful in her service
Most Holy Mary, Our Mother, in your great love for us you gave us the Holy Scapular of Mount Carmel, having heard the prayers of your chosen son Saint Simon Stock. Help us now to wear it faithfully and with devotion. May it be a sign to us of our desire to grow in holiness.
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Listening to the Word: The Visitation (Lk 1: 39-45)
In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."
Reflection: Soon after hearing the Angel’s message, the Mother of the Lord goes to her cousin Elisabeth who is old and expects a child. The Gospel says that she left in a hurry to place herself at the service of the needy. The Virgin does not allow the fact that the hope of Israel will be fulfilled in her "go to her head", but in utter humility she leaves to serve through small and simple house tasks.
Prayer: Mother Mary, expert servant, help us understand that it is only by being each other’s servants that we can be true followers of your Son.
Mother Mary, expert servant, enable us to be always available to those whom we meet in our daily life.
Mother Mary, Vine blossom laden, help us compete in being charitable
My commitment is to serve those who are close to me. In imitation of the Virgin Mary, I shall try to serve ever better those who are least pleasing to me.
~~~

Third Day – JULY 9    Mary, the mother who clothes us with the Scapular
O Queen of Heaven, you gave us the Scapular as an outward sign by which we might be known as your faithful children. may we always wear it with honor by avoiding sin and imitating your virtues. Help us to be faithful to this desire of ours.
(pause and mention petitions) s)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: The birth (Lk 2: 1-20)

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrolment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Reflection: Luke, the Evangelist, relates the affectionate and motherly gesture of Mary who wraps little Jesus in swaddling clothes. A gesture made by every mother as a sign of protection and care. We too are wrapped in swaddling clothes by Mary, our Mother and Sister; through the Scapular she looks after us and protects us. She wraps us so that we may grow strong and robust in the school of her Son.

Prayer: Virgin Mary, you who wrap your Jesus in swaddling clothes, teach us to be always small so that we may "be carried in God’s arms".
Virgin Mother, who warp your Jesus in swaddling clothes, help us to clothe ourselves with your Son, so that each day we may be a sign of God’s love.
Virgin Mary, Splendour of heaven, hold us tight under your mantle.

My commitment is to clothe myself with the Scapular so that I may witness, even externally, to my love for Jesus and Mary. Above all, I wish that the Scapular may remind me to live every day in the school of Jesus, after the example of the Virgin.

Fourth Day – JULY 10   Mary, contemplative woman
When you gave us, Gracious Lady, the Scapular as our Habit, you called us to be not only servants, but also your own children.
We ask you to gain for us from your Son the grace to live as you children in joy, peace and love.(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: The visit of the Magi (Mt 2: 1-12)

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’"
Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Reflection: What would Mary and Joseph have thought when they saw these mysterious men coming from afar to see their little Jesus? And yet, the Son of God became man for all, also for these people who came from "afar". Mary immediately understands and shows Jesus to them too. Mary is the true contemplative, that is, the one who can see reality with the eyes of God. Are we contemplatives? Do we see reality with the eyes of God? Are we capable of giving Jesus to those we meet, those we know and those we don’t know, our co-citizens and strangers, rich and poor?

Prayer: Blessed Mary, contemplative woman, teach us to keep in our hearts the situations of every day so that we may then see them with the eyes of God.
Blessed Mary, contemplative woman, teach us to see in the people we meet the face of your Son and not discriminate in any way.
Blessed Mary, child-bearing yet maiden, take us to Jesus.

My commitment is not to judge the people I meet during the day, but to see in each of them the face of the Lord.

Fifth Day – JULY 11    Mary, Lady of the offering
O Mother of Fair Love, through your goodness, as your children, we are called to live in the spirit of Carmel. Help us to live in charity with one another, prayerful as Elijah of old, and mindful of our call to minister to God’s people.
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: The presentation at the temple (Lk 2: 22-32)

And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord") and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel."

Reflection: Let us try to stand as spectators at this event: Mary, Joseph and Jesus, a family that goes to the temple to offer the child to the Lord. If we wish to translate this event into our terms, it is a little like a family that prepares to take a child for baptism. We have so often taken part in festivities of this kind. However, let us try to examine the Mother’s heart: she wholeheartedly offers to God the child to whom she gave birth. Are we capable of imitating her in our daily life?

Prayer: Daughter of Sion, Lady of the offering, envelop our hearts so that we may belong to Jesus completely.
Daughter of Sion, Lady of the offering, free our hearts so that without any fear we may be exclusively His property.
Daughter of Sion, Mother so tender, make our hearts like yours.

My commitment is to detach myself from something to which I am greatly attached and offer it to someone I particularly do not like. This is so that I may imitate the Mother of my Lord who offered Her Son with a pure heart.

Sixth Day – JULY 12   Mary, untiring seeker of God
With loving provident care, O Mother Most Amiable, you covered us with your Scapular as a shield of defense against the Evil One.
Through your assistance, may we bravely struggle against the powers of evil, always open to your Son Jesus Christ.
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: The finding in the temple (Lk 2: 41-50)

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?" And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them.

Reflection: Mary and Joseph are distressed at the loss of their son, Jesus. They set out to search for him and find him after three days. In our life sometimes it seems that Jesus hides himself from us and leaves us alone. What do we do? Do we despair? Do we turn towards other goods? Or do we set out in search of Jesus so as not to loose him ever again. Mary and Joseph teach us to be untiring seekers of God, because he has made us for himself and our heart is restless until it rests in him (St. Augustine).

Prayer: Dear Mary, untiring seeker of God, give us the strength you had in seeking your Jesus who was lost in the temple.
Dear Mary, untiring seeker of God, guide our steps so that on life’s journey we may always follow Jesus, lighthouse that enlightens us.
Dear Mary, Mother most pure, be our faithful companion on the journey towards Jesus.

My commitment is to pray more in times when Jesus seems to have abandoned me.

Seventh Day – JULY 13    Mary, listening virgin
O Mary, Help of Christians, you assured us that wearing your Scapular worthily would keep us safe from harm. Protect us in both body and soul with your continual aid. may all that we do be pleasing to your Son and to you.
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: Blessed are the breasts you sucked (Lk 11: 27-28)

As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

Reflection: It may seem that Jesus belittles Mary’s part, preferring his disciples. But if we read the text carefully we will see that Jesus is really praising his mother. She is the woman who listens to the Word of God and keeps it all the time. She is an attentive disciple who keeps in her heart her Son’s words and day after day keeps them. She points the way to us so that we too may imitate her if we wish to be truly her devotees.

Prayer: Beautiful Mother, listening virgin, open our hearts so that we may learn to listen to the words of your Son.
Beautiful Mother, listening virgin, open our hearts and minds that we may learn to listen to the words of your Son and keep them.
Mother so tender, pure of heart, strengthen us in our resolve.

My commitment is to listen attentively to the Word of God when it is proclaimed in church. I also commit myself to listen to God who speaks to me through the people I meet throughout the day.

Eighth Day – JULY 14   Mary, mother at the foot of the cross
You give us hope, O Mother of Mercy, that through your Scapular promise we might quickly pass through the fires of purgatory to the Kingdom of your Son. Be our comfort and our hope.
Grant that our hope may not be in vain but that, ever faithful to your Son and to you, we may speedily enjoy after death the blessed company of Jesus and the saints.
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: At the foot of the cross (Jn 19: 25-27)

So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Reflection: John tells us that at the foot of the cross, stood Mary and John. Mary, the mother, John, the beloved disciple. The Virgin Mother stands at the foot of the cross to give strength to her Son to fulfil his last hour. This passage of the Bible, dear to the heart of every Carmelite, teaches us that in times of suffering we are not alone, Mary and Jesus are with us. It also reminds us that, by dying, the Lord gave us his mother as a precious gift. Let us try to be grateful to him by the example of our lives.

Prayer: Mary, mother at the foot of the cross, stand by our side in our daily crosses so that, like you, we may stand and accept and offer our sufferings.
Mary, mother at the foot of the cross, open our hearts so that we may welcome you at all times as the gift given us by Jesus when he was dying.
Mary, mother who bestows favours on her children, be our guide in our daily life.

My commitment is to show myself a neighbour to someone who is suffering, physically or spiritually.

Ninth Day – JULY 15    Mary, sister in the Christian community
O Most Holy Mother of Mount Carmel
, when asked by a saint to grant privileges to the family of Carmel, you gave assurance of your Motherly love and help to those faithful to you and to your Son.
Behold us, your children.
We glory in wearing your holy habit, which makes us members of your family of Carmel, through which we shall have your powerful protection in life, at death and even after death.
Look down with love, O Gate of Heaven, on all those now in their last agony!
Look down graciously, O Virgin, Flower of Carmel, on all those in need of help!
Look down mercifully, O Mother of our Savior, on all those who do not know that they are numbered among your children.
Look down tenderly, O Queen of All Saints, on the poor souls!
(pause and mention petitions)
Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Listening to the Word: With Mary, the Mother of Jesus (Acts 1: 12-14)

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Reflection: Jesus ascended into heaven and the first Christian community gathers to pray together. Among them is Mary, Mother and Sister. In our assemblies too, Mary prays with us. Let us then make our participation in the Eucharistic mystery, a participation that is full of joy and life; we are not alone. Jesus is with us. Mary, his and our Mother, is with us.

Prayer: Holy Mary, sister in our Christian communities, be our Sister in our daily life and in our prayer.
Holy Mary, sister in our Christian communities, sit by our side and pray with us so that our prayer may be according to the desire of your Son.
Mary, Star of the sea, Mother and Sister in Carmel, gather us closely under your mantle.

My commitment is to contribute to enlivening the Sunday Eucharistic celebration in my parish, so that it may be truly a moment of joy and fraternal prayer.

Flower of Carmel
Vine blossom-laden,
splendour of heaven,
Child-bearing yet maiden,
None equals thee.

Mother so tender,
whom no man didst know,
On Carmel’s children
thy favours bestow,
Star of the sea.
