Little Flowers 4th Meeting – Loyalty & St. Lucy

December 9, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Little Flowers, Loyalty, St. Lucy

We had a great turn out for the last Little Flowers of the year!
girls recapped on our last meeting, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  They were reminded of the “treat box.”  The girls can earn a treat for each assignment completed that is signed by a parent.

I briefed the girls on the pious life of St. Lucy.  Info was gathered from the following resources.  I explained to the girls her vow to remain chaste and pure (a virgin) despite the culture pressures and her mother’s wishes to marry.

St. Lucia Devotions

Life of St. Lucy

The girls discussed loyalty, faithfulness to a cause or belief.  They identified that St. Lucy was loyal to God.

I decided to introduce the girls to the Swedish tradition of celebrating St. Lucia’s Feast Day, Luciadagen.  They made a St. Lucia Crown of Lights.  Her traditional feast day is December 13.
Father L visited the girls.  He questioned the girls on what he spoke of at Mass, the true meaning of Christmas and an Advent activity.  He also spoke of St. Nicholas.  Lastly, he gave the girls their blessing.
The girls took another break for snack provided by Rose.  They went outside for pictures but decided to return to the room.  It was too cold outside for the girls.
We ended the meeting with some brief housekeeping and a review of assignments for the month.

Christmas Anticipation Prayer

Jan Brueghel the Elder. Landscape on the Coast, with the Calling of St. Peter and St. Andrew

Beginning on St. Andrew the Apostle’s feast day, November 30, the following beautiful prayer is traditionally recited fifteen times a day until Christmas. This is a very meditative prayer that helps us increase our awareness of the real focus of Christmas and helps us prepare ourselves spiritually for His coming.

(It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayer fifteen times a day from the feast of St. Andrew (30th November) until Christmas will obtain what is asked.)

Happy Birthday To My BEST Friend

November 18, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Happy Birthday

I love you for the boy you were when we met and the God fearing man you have become. I’ve known life with you longer than I’ve known life without you. Because of that I know all your weaknesses and quarks but I also know all your gifts and strengths – there are many.

~your warm smile and great ability to be silly
~your trust in God
~your desire to always grow in faith
~your willingness to let others shine
~you sacrificed your own interests for your children and your vocation of Husband/Father
~your ability to be corrected
~you value family time and are with us more than your away
~your desire to please your loved ones more than the appearance to others
~you prayerfully support and encourage me in all I do
~your spontaneity
~your patience and gentleness
~your willingness to help me with all things (especially the cleaning)
~you always kiss and bless me & the kids goodnight and goodbye
~your unconditional Love for me

Our walk has not been an easy one but I’m thankful that together we have grown closer to Our Lord. You are a wonderful father of our beautiful children. They are blessed to call you daddy. You bring laughter to our home and everywhere you go (and not just because of the way you look…..gotcha!)

I pray that we continue to walk the walk and fight the good fight leading one another closer to Eternal Life.

May Our Heavenly Father continue to shower you with His abundant love and mercy. May you grow in His light and be pleasing to Him in everything you do.

Happy Blessed Day!

Little Flowers 3rd Meeting – Perseverance & St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

November 12, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Little Flowers, Perseverance, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

We had a great turn out, as usual.  There were 6 six girls who sat together at Mass but others were in attendance.

We welcomed our newest Little Flower, Rose.  She was happy to see familiar faces and meet new ones.  The girls had a brief time to visit during snack time.  Clare passed out her snacks to the girls.  Thank you Mary for signing up for this month on such short of a notice.

I  introduced the girls to the saint of the month, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  I set the setting, the United States in the 1700’s.  The girls were delighted to hear that she was born in New York.  Although, they all expressed how far that was from them.  I tried to but it into perspective for them by drawing attempting to draw a map of the US and Europe.  Despite my lack of artistic ability the girls got the idea.

I gathered my info on St. Elizabeth Ann Seton from the following sites.
Seton Shrine
Catholic.org
Catholic Encyclopedia
EWTN

The letter of the day was ‘E’ for Elizabeth taken from An Alphabet of Catholic SAINTS.

Father L visited the girls and recapped on All Saints day and All Souls day.  He emphasized the importance of prayer for the souls in purgatory.  He also explained our current virtue, perseverance.  He told the girls, “God calls you to do your best and He will do the rest.”  He gave the analogy of a student who tried his hardest in his studies but only received Cs.  “Would God be pleased,” he asked.  The girls unanimously responded, “YES!”  “What about the little girl who never worked hard or did her best and received As and Bs – would God be pleased?”  Again, the girls responded accordingly.  I love how they get messages that we adults sometimes think that they’re not ready for.

He gave the girls a blessing before his departure.

We applied the virtue of perseverance to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s life.  She had many ups and downs but persevered to answer God’s call for her.  That lead us to our craft, prayer/keepsake box and gratitude cards.

The gratitude cards were selcted from those listed here.

The gratitude cards are intended to be used from now until the start of Advent – Nov. 29.  The girls were asked to work on preparing their hearts to receive the most wonderful gift, Jesus.  They were encouraged to randomly select a card from their box daily but to persevere if they were not able to make a daily selection or the task asked was too much for them.  The primary objective is to PERSEVERE, do the best they can with the task at hand.

The box was decoupaged with a picture of Our Blessed Mother, Lord Jesus Christ, and/or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  It can be used as a prayer box to store the intentions of their family and friends.  The box can also be used for keepsakes such as Rosary, Miraculous Medal, etc.  The girls we’re invited to entertain the thought of giving the box as a gift to another.

Above is a picture of the box I created along with the gratitude cards.  There should be 1-2 blank cards in the box to write your own intention/task.  The cards are designed to be placed on the twine provided as completed.  You can hang the twine in a visible spot in your home so all can reflect on something to be thankful for.

I put our twine and cards over the fireplace.  The kids love to see what they have completed and what they are thankful for.  Sparkles couldn’t wait to start her cards.  She was even more excited when she selected the card, “I’m Thankful For Our Car.”  Her task was to clean the car and then go out for ice cream cones.  She has never been so happy to clean the car.  She rallied her sisters and went to work.  I even gave a hand.  I couldn’t resist their enthusiasm.

The girls were given their monthly assignment sheet, scripture verse sheet, and a paper doll of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  Below are the links to many of the additional activities provided.  I will take time out next meeting for housekeeping of the girl’s binders.  Please be sure they bring them to the meeting.

Children of Fatima and Our Lady

November 11, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: All Saints Day, Costumes, Fall 4 Comments

Our GFG decided to dress up as the Children of Fatima and Our Lady for All Saints Day.  Their costumes ended up being last minute due to the little ones illness.  I embellished a white gown that I made for Rose a few years back when she was St. Lucy.  The little ones were able to find something in their closets.  I made the girls a black head covering.  They were the simplest costumes yet (and I do simple).  The girls have already used their black head coverings for play and Rosary time.

Getting Back On Track

November 11, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Family Night, GFG, Home

It’s been some time since I last posted.  All the little ones have recovered and now the eldest is sick.  She is a trooper and prayerfully helping on the home front.

This time in our life as been like no other.  We have been pulled outside the home more for financial necessity.  We are thankful for the family support and graces from Our Heavenly Father.

I continue to try to find time for all that has occupied our day in the past but seldom ever get to half the items on the list.  This has been very overwhelming for me as I tend to be a perfectionist.  Nonetheless, I’m thankful for the opportunity to surrender and seek Him first. Matthew 6:33

Since the last post we:
missed the pumpkin patch field trip
got a pumpkin from the store
made carmel apples
pieced together All Saints Day costumes at the last min.
were not able to have a booth for All Saints Day
attended our Annual Parish All Saints Day Party
visited Monterey Bay Aquarium on one of their Annual Homeschool Days
played at the beach
detoxed from TV/videos and have been working on training hearts to pleasing to Our Lord (all after being sick and needing time to rest while watching videos and having others wait on your ever need)
had our 3rd Little Flowers meeting
watched the Sandhill Cranes
announced to the kids that they will be having a new baby brother/sister in May!!!

I’ll be trying to get caught up with postings over the next few days.

God’s hand is present at all times….last week

October 26, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: GFG, Prayer, Spiritual Reflections

It’s been a long week full of trails and opportunity to rely solely on God’s providence. The three little ones and I became sick with a bad cold. It lingered but still we managed. Sparkles is the most pleasant sick child we have. She asks for little and rarely complains. That is until Sparkles fever persisted for 4 days. I took her in for a checkup and after a three hour visit she was diagnosed with the early stages of pneumonia. She was prescribed an antibiotic and sent home to recover. We gave thanks to God for her medical insurance (we have gone with out for some time), early diagnosis and the technology of medicine. Sparkles gave thanks for her time out with mom alone. Oh, the simple pleasures of being six.

This time of illness in our home has been like no other. My man (dear husband) has a new schedule that requires him to be gone during the day. In the past he has worked from home. Recently, he has taken a job that allows him to maintain a night schedule and be with us during the day. My children and I are accustomed to having him with us 24/7. He is the head of the home and I couldn’t imagine our days without him. Well, Our Gracious Lord has slowly weaned me to days without him. Currently, his school schedule requires him to be gone during the day too. We will continue to adjust and rely on Our Heavenly Father to guide us.

————-

I had a regular check up schedule (since last month) for all my little ones on Friday, Oct. 23. I was tempted to reschedule because I didn’t want to take all the sick ones out. However, Papi woke up Friday morning not as his usual self. Needless to say, we were running late. Very late! The girls were checked and Sparkles was showing improvement but the story was not so optimistic for Papi.

He was immediately sent for a breathing treatment on a Nebulizer. This was his first treatment ever. Lets just say, it wasn’t fun. Papi is nothing like Sparkles when he is sick. He is a fighter naturally and being ill seems to give him an extra edge.

Papa’s stats after his treatment caused alarm to his doctor. She immediately sent him off for a chest x-ray and I was told that he would need to stay at the doctor’s office for 3 hours for his oxygen levels to rise. Sparkles and Sweetie were already on their second movie and although they probably wouldn’t have mind hanging around a couple more hours for a few more movies their brother, I called their Papa. He graciously agreed to pick the girls up.

Papi had his x-ray and the girls waited in the lobby with their snacks. Rose is awesome and always prepared. Praise be to God for older sisters.

Papi and I were taken directly back to the treatment room when we arrived back upstairs. The girls worked their way downstairs to be picked up by Papa. They were a little nervous to leave their brother.

Papi’s doctor meet us in the treatment room with the results from the x-ray. The news was not good. Papi had severe pneumonia in both lungs and would need to be admitted to the hospital. I gave thanks for health insurance (once again), cell phones, grandparents, medical technology and our faith.

Last week my mother added a line to her plan for my husband. We had been sharing a cell phone for a couple years now. I don’t know how I would have been able to get in touch with him had he not had a cell since he was in class for the day.

My parents have been a great blessing to me and my family. Most recently, they have provided for us during the last two-plus years while we have been but through many trials. At first it was difficult for myself to accept their help but with spiritual direction and prayer I have been able to allow Our Lord to work through my parents. They help without ever expecting anything in return and have been patient with us during this difficult time. We pray that we can glorify God and lead our family closer to Our Lord. We also pray to be able to repay my parents for their unconditional love and generosity, in anyway the Lord permits.

——————

I waited at the doctor’s office for close to 2 hours before a bed became available for Papi. He took a cat nap, read every book and tried out the doctor’s office bathroom 3 times as we waited. I picked up my husband on the way to the hospital. It worked out perfectly since my husband’s school is near the hospital and our alternate car broke down earlier in the week.

Papi had not eaten lunch. We stopped for Taco Bell. Any fast food is a treat for us. He wasn’t thrilled but I knew it was our best hope for him to get something in his stomach. He’s room was ready to go when we arrived. It was the smoothest hospital/emergency visit we’ve ever had.

I was able to get half the burrito in Papi before all the necessary tubes and prodding started. He was excited about the cartoons, another treat for him.

His visit was set for one night but due to his need for oxygen, he’s stay was extended. My husband stood the night with him while a picked the girls up from Papa and Nana’s house.

We prayed for acceptance of God’s will.

In the morning as I prepared and debated if I should go to the hospital (due to all the Swine Flu out breaks), my husband called with wonderful news. Papi was able to be taken off the oxygen last night (Fri) and was going to be released after another breathing treatment.

The girls eagerly prepared the house for his return and I went to pick up my handsome boys.

He is now home recovering and almost back to himself. Praise be to God!
