…soon! We have not officially started our school year. We finished up in June and will start back up in September. However, we have begun our usual school readiness – where we gradually add a couple of “school items” to our daily routine. This is probably more for me than for the kids. They’re always ready to school and in fact, they do but they don’t consider it school unless all the new school items are in place. I on the other hand, need a gradual transition. The transition helps me to work out scheduling conflicts, rev up to an early rise time, train the littlest ones so that they’re somewhat used to a more structured day once school is completely in session, and lastly – I love schooling!
Really, I do! Once, when Rose was about 7 she asked me, “mom, what did you want to be when you were a kid?” I replied, “ a teacher. I was always playing school in my home. I would set up my bedroom for school and my stuffed animals were the students. I even had a school-like chalkboard/whiteboard that was on rollers. I loved pretending that I was a teacher.” She quickly chimed in, “Mom!!! Your dream came true…you are a teacher…you teach me at home!!!”
I had never put the two together like that before. It was a consolation that I needed at that time and one that I often need to reflect back on. God is good!

Prayers For My Vocation
"Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children… the right and duty of parents to give education is essential… incapable of being entirely delegated to others or usurped by others." Pope John Paul II
I’m still planning for our next school year and was edified when I came across the prayer below.
May Our Heavenly Father hear the prayers of all homeschooling moms and families at this very anxious time, the start of a new school year.
My friend and I jokingly acknowledged that God is probably the most busiest during the start of a new school year thanks to homeschooling moms. I’m sure I add my share.

Prayer of a Homeschool Mom ~ Heather Miller
O Lord, my Father, hear my prayer. Hear the sorrows and the joys intermingled that I lift to You. Hear my praise and thanksgiving as well as my pleas. Listen to my words, Lord God, and answer with Your own.
Bless my family, Lord, the lot of them, loud and crazy though we may be. Bless me, Lord, for I cannot be a blessing to them if I am too tired and stressed myself. Bless my husband, for he is truly a wonderful man, worthy of admiration as he strives to be like You. Bless my children, each one, in their unique little personalities, in their amazing little lives, bless them, Lord. Bless our home: it is not grand or worthy of a magazine, but it is home, Lord, and we love it.
How wonderful You are, Lord! How amazing Your creation! How I thank You for these precious children You have placed into our lives and our care and our teaching! I stand in constant amazement at the world around me, Lord, the world that You created. I am caught up in the beauty of even the smallest, simplest thing—the ladybug, the butterfly, the tulip just emerging. I am awed by the glory of the sun and the twinkling vastness of the night sky. I am amazed beyond words at the tiny, intricate details You have worked into everything. How amazing the human body! How fragile we are, and yet You have made us so strong! How truly miraculous the conception of a human soul, and the growth of that soul inside me, emerging as a blessed child! I am amazed at the workings of plants, the immensity of the solar system, the instincts of animals; of the love between husband and wife, parent and child! You are truly great, O Lord, truly amazing and powerful, and yet so loving and patient. You are the perfect parent, Father God, and how I wish I could be more like You!
Give my children the Christ-like attitude I so want them to have, Lord. Grant them the precious honor of a relationship with You. Help me as I try to bring them to You, Father, as I try to introduce them to the wonder that is You. Give them each a spirit of obedience both to us, their earthly parents, and to You, the ultimate authority. Give them each a spirit of cheerfulness as they go about their daily duties. Help them learn the joys of helping others, even if it is only a little brother. Give them each a spirit of compassion, of kindness, of joy. Help them see the miracle in each new day, the miracle of life, of nature, of salvation! Give them each a love for learning, a childlike curiosity that will not fade as they grow older. Give them Your love, O Lord, give them You. Give them safety and health and happiness, Lord. Give them good childhoods and good memories.
Give us a happy home, Lord. Let our beds always be warm and snug in winter, cool and dark in summer. Let our TV remain turned off most of the time, and our brains turned on. Let our kitchen always be filled with good food and our table with good dinner conversation. Bless our little home, Lord. Bless us all!
Help me realize always the great privilege of teaching my children. Help me keep in mind always that teaching them is also a great responsibility, a responsibility that You have commanded of each and every Christian parent. Help me take that responsibility with all seriousness, for it is so very important that our children are brought up according to Your commands and statutes. Help us bear in mind always that these children are only ours for a little while, that they are truly Your children, Lord, whom You have given to us for a season of life. Help me be willing, Lord, to give my all for the children’s sake, because they truly are "the least of these," and so whatever I do for them, however I speak to them, however I act toward them, in these same ways I speak and act toward You.
Help me, Lord, to remember to see each of my children as You do. Help me to see the beauty in each one, their potential but also the beauty that resides in them right now, this moment, beauty in them because they are my blessing from You.
Help me to have patience, God. Patience with sticky messes and with bed-wetting, patience with frustrated learners and with cabin-fever whining. Grant me patience when emotions overflow and they lash out in hurt or anger toward me or toward each other. Grant me patience when asked to explain that same thing . . . again.
Grant me peace, Lord. Peace among the chaos that is our life. Help me to know the difference between peace and quiet, for sometimes the most truly peaceful moments are also the loudest. Give me peace when the children are sick or the day seems just too long. Give me peace when plans fail and days go horribly wrong. Give me peace when the critics mount against us and doubt and uncertainties begin to creep in. Give me peace, Lord, the peace that passes understanding. I don’t need to understand it, Lord, I just need peace.
Bless me, Lord, with a true servant’s heart. Help me find the joy in all the little ways I can serve my family. Give me a heart that loves to teach, even at the end of a trying day. Give me a heart that finds satisfaction in washing the dishes or doing the laundry, because in doing these things I care for my precious family. Give me a heart that swells with love when asked to read a book, sing a song, view an art project, read something my child has written, play a game, or just hold a small one on my lap. Help me, God, to die to myself and to heed the high calling of the servanthood of mothering. Help me, Lord, to realize what a privilege it is to be a mother to these wonderful children, to love them, care for them, and teach them every day.
Teach me humility, Lord God. Chastise me as a loving Father should when my heart and head stray and I do things out of selfishness or conceit. Show me where I am wrong, God, and help me to do what is right. Help me to do it for the right reasons. Help me always to remember that I am not perfect, that I am not even the best at what I do. Help me to humbly acknowledge that every good thing I do is done because You have graciously blessed me with the ability and knowledge to do it. Help me always to remember that I can do nothing without You—but all things are possible with You!
Help me to remember that sometimes children know more truth than I do and to listen and learn from these little blessings You have given me. Help me never to place myself above anyone else, or to think that I know it all, because pride goeth before a fall, and Lord, You know how proud I can be sometimes. And I’m awfully tired of falling.
Grant me wisdom, God. You know I need it! For though I may be knowledgeable by this world’s standards, I know that true wisdom comes from You alone. Give me wisdom in choosing the things to teach my children, in knowing what books to use and what subjects to teach. Give me wisdom to discern when my children are ready for more solid spiritual food. Give me wisdom to answer the questions they ask, even the hard ones.
Above all else, give me love, Lord. Give me Your love when I’m weary. Give me enough love that it spills over, out of me onto the people around me. Give me love for my husband and children all day, every day, even on those days, Lord. If I have not love, I am nothing, God, but I have You, and You are love, so grant me a piece of You, this Holy Spirit that lives inside me. Help me to let You shine forth through me to my family.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

San Lorenzo
*Tonight, or especially tomorrow night and up to the dawn of 12 August, 1 if you look up at a clear sky in the Northern hemisphere, you may be blessed to see the Perseid meteor shower, 2 debris of the comet Swift-Tuttle whose “radiant” (point of apparent origin) is in the constellation of Perseus. This meteor shower is known as “the tears of St. Lawrence” because it is most visible at this time of year, though these streaks of light can sometimes be seen as early as 17 July and as late as 24 August.

High School Space
Rose had her school room revamped last school year. It is a bedroom downstairs turned school room, office and craft space. We’ve been organizing it bit by bit.
She doesn’t mind that it is a work in progress, she is just happy to have a private school room away from the little ones.
Here’s how it looked a couple of weeks ago. Thank goodness it’s summer!
We did a clean sweep today. We even got some crafting/decorating in. We turned a $5 canvas we recently bought at a garage sale into map art. We also adhered our Dollar Store find, chalk board decals. Lastly, we hung 2 shelves that were on clearance at Target.
Rose was thrilled to have her $6 Costco map up on the wall.
Rose wanted one of the chalk board decals on the door. She plans on using it as a “do not disturb” sign. We’ll see how it goes. The little ones have not figured out that it is a chalk board. The second decal was placed on the green wall under the map. It will be used for the saint of the day, date and other reminders for Rose. The black frame holds a fabric covered bulletin board. Rose prefers to store her books in the IKEA magazine holders. (Sparkles and Sweetie use the inexpensive version of IKEA mag files.) She takes each file out as she works on the particular subject.
This little area on the green wall will be Rose’s gallery wall. She selected Sparkle’s Marian Grotto and Sacred Heart of Jesus Tile. I surprised her with a picture from her pre-homeschool days when she started preschool in 1997. The picture is a family portrait that she created when she was 5 years old, the end of her Kindergarten school year. Rose’s mouse pad adorned with a favorite saint, St Thérèse of Lisieux.
The closet is still a catch-all. It houses the go to supplies, Little Flower supplies, file cabinet (given away for free on Craigslist), wrapping supplies, sewing machine, and other misc. items.
Check out Heart of the Matter for more homeschool rooms. Edie created my favorite school room of all time. I can’t wait to see her new homeschool space at her lake home.
UPDATE:
8.10.10 – I hope to add my k-3 school room this week, God willing. I also wanted to share another favorite “learning space” that I’m sure is loved by all. Nicole has created an awesome schoolroom. I think I’ll be adding the rain gutters (to a room in my house, any room) this year.
Inviting Christ
“May He strengthen you inwardly through the working of His Spirit. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of your life" (Eph 3:14-17).
We organized our 5th National Night Out NNO (3rd in this neighborhood). It almost didn’t happen. I had attempted to find another event organizer earlier in the year since I new baby G was due in May, Mr. would be swamped in clinicals and long work hours, school prep would be taking place…..the list goes on. I waited but there were no willing parties. I thought that we would just forgo this year’s event. However, Our Lord had other plans.
I believe that that Our Heavenly Father is prompting my family to form community. We are still discerning this call and pray to obediently follow. Currently, we attempt to witness to those physical neighbors that have been put before us. We do this in several ways, NNO being one of them.
Just as I was ready to be at peace with not coordinating the event and being able to help the community come together, a gentle reminder was placed. This reminder came in the way of Catholic radio. More specifically, Teresa Tomeo. Teresa Tomeo mentioned National Night Out in her morning news segment on Monday, August 2.
I took the prompting and began to send emails and print fliers for distribution – all for an event that was to take place the following day. There’s nothing like last minute! (it’s all in God’s timing, right.)
The kids canvassed the neighborhood, posting signs on Monday afternoon and early Tuesday Morning.
The turnout was perfect. The event was simplified from the years past but probably the most joyous of all. I was able to relax and connect with neighbors. Mr. was also able to join us for the last 30 min. Papi kept his pants on the entire evening (that’s a story for another time). It was a success ~ praise be to God!
Simplify is another prompting from the Holy Ghost that has been placed on our hearts. We are a work in progress but definitely feel the call to SIMPLIFY in ALL areas of our lives – words, material possessions, food, extracurricular activities, spiritual practices……to better follow Him.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the LORD delivers him out of them all. Psalms 34:19
Simplify; repair; love
Please keep the following neighbors in prayer:

O my God, come to me…
St. John Vianney Prayer ~ “O my God, come to me, so that You may dwell in me and I may dwell in You.”
Feast Day – August 7
In life, St. John Vianney was a revered 19th-century French clergyman who was said to be blessed with the ability to read the hearts of worshippers. In death, his own heart has become an object of worship. St. Vianney’s body is incorrupt (never decayed), and his heart and body each have been encased in separate glass reliquaries in France since his death 150 years ago.
The relic of the heart of St. John Vianney was brought to the U.S. for the first time since 2006.
My family is on pilgrimage (an item on my List), a Relic Pilgrimage. We are visiting relics throughout California. Our finances are tight, our time is stretched, and our little ones are a priority – that leads us to find all spiritual opportunities in our “back yard.”
Our first official stop on our pilgrimage was on July 15, a visit to venerate the heart of St. John Mary Vianney .
My blessed Mr. took time off from his clinical and prepared to lead the way on our pilgrimage. Mr. had no sleep. He came straight from his night shift. Sparkles and Sweetie were filled with excitement as they anticipated this glorious opportunity to grow closer to Our Heavenly Father, through their veneration of the relic of St. John Vianney. Rose remained prayerful and was deeply touched by her visit.
Upon our return home, the little girls have continued their devotion to St. John Vianney. They have even created a special shrine in their bedroom for their newly beloved Saint. In fact, they have taken it upon themselves to adorn all bedrooms with St. John Mary Vianney’s holy card.

St. John Mary Vianney Quotes
“All the good works in the world are not equal to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass because they are the works of men; but the Mass is the work of God. Martyrdom is nothing in comparison for it is but the sacrifice of man to God; but the Mass is the sacrifice of God for man.”
“I tell you that you have less to suffer in following the cross than in serving the world and its pleasures.”
“Prayer is to our soul what rain is to the soil. Fertilize the soil ever so richly, it will remain barren unless fed by frequent rains.”
“Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself.”
“Man is a beggar who needs to ask God for everything.”
“When our hands have touched spices, they give fragrance to all they handle. Let us make our prayers pass through the hands of the Blessed Virgin. She will make them fragrant.”
“All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone – for the good, and for the bad, for the poor and for the rich, and for all those who do us harm as much as those who do us good. “
“Upon receiving Holy Communion, the Adorable Blood of Jesus Christ really flows in our veins and His Flesh is really blended with ours.”
“We should consider those moments spent before the Blessed Sacrament as the happiest of our lives.”
“If we could comprehend all the good things contained in Holy Communion, nothing more would be wanting to content the heart of man. The miser would run no more after his treasures, or the ambitious after glory; each would shake off the dust of the earth, leave the world, and fly away towards heaven.”
“When we go before the Blessed Sacrament, let us open our heart; our good God will open His. We shall go to Him; He will come to us; the one to ask, the other to receive. It will be like a breath from one to the other.”
“Christian wife! Follow in the footsteps of the ideal of all womanhood, the Blessed Mother of God; in joy and in sorrow, she will be your advocate at the throne of her Son.”

Meatball ~ Mount Carmel
Although there is no historical evidence for the pre-Christian Carmelite community, references in the 12th century record a community of monks on the holy mountain. Despite continual difficulties, the community built a monastery and church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on Mount Carmel in 1263. Saint Louis, King of France, had visited Mount Carmel in 1254, and brought back six French hermits for whom he built a convent near Paris. Mount Carmel was taken by the Saracens in 1291, and the brothers were killed and the convent burned. The spread of the Carmelites in Europe is largely attributable to the work of Saint Simon Stock (1247-65). The Carmelite Order was formally approved in 1274 at the Council of Lyon.’

Our Lady of Mount Carmel
July 16 – Today is the principal feast day of the Carmelite Order. Through the efforts of the crusader Berthold, a group of hermits living on Mount Carmel were organized into an Order after the traditional Western type about the year 1150. Oppressed by the Saracens, the monks slowly emigrated to Europe. During the night preceding the sixteenth of July, 1225, the Blessed Virgin is said to have commanded Pope Honorius III to approve the foundation. Since the Carmelites were still under constant harassment, the sixth General of the Order, St. Simon Stock, pleaded with the Blessed Virgin for some special sign of her protection. On July 16, 1251, she designated the scapular as the special mark of her maternal love. That is why the present feast is also known as the feast of the Scapular. The scapular, as part of the habit, is common to many religious Orders, but it is a special feature of the Carmelites. A smaller form of the scapular is given to lay persons in order that they may share in the great graces associated with it. Such a grace is the “Sabbatine privilege.” In the so-called Bulla Sabbatina John XXII affirmed that wearers of the scapular are soon freed from the flames of purgatory, at least by the Saturday after death. The confirmation of the Bulla Sabbatina was promulgated by the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences, July 4, 1908
