THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD

DOUBLE, FIRST CLASS / WHITE

January 6

The word “Epiphany” means “manifestation.” The Church in the Mass commemorates a triple manifestation of Christ: to the Magi, that is, to the Gentiles; in His Baptism, when the Voice from heaven declared: “This is My beloved Son”; and in the miracle of changing water into wine at Cana.

The mystery of the Christ-birth is a rich and glorious beginning, splendid with promise. Today we worship a partial fulfillment when Jesus, as an Infant King, is manifested to wise men of the Gentile world and through them to all peoples. His royalty is neither frightening nor pompous, for the kingly majesty of the sovereign Redeemer is robed in babyhood. Coming in the simplicity of true greatness, Jesus makes Himself acceptable and at home to the little and the great of every nation under heaven.

How can we bring similar offerings to Christ?

We offer gold to Him, when we love Him with our whole heart, and out of love to Him, present Him our will by perfect obedience and continual self-denial, as our will is our most precious treasure. We also offer Him gold when we assist the poor by alms given in His name. We offer Him frankincense when we devoutly and ardently pray to Him, especially when we meditate upon His omnipotence, love, goodness, justice and mercy. We offer Him myrrh when we avoid carnal desires, mortify our evil inclinations and passions, and strive for purity of body and soul.

Litany

(from Christmas to Epiphany)

….O Blessed parents of the Infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph,we humbly and earnestly implore you to beg for us, at the crib of your Infant Son, that like Him and as His true and faithful followers, we may love to live in true humility, disengagement from creatures, contempt of the world and it’s vanities, constant recollection of the holy presence of God, fervour and fidelity in all of our duties, and in the practice of the tenderest charity to all persons.  May we never blush at the humility of the crib, nor at the poverty  and simplicity of Bethlehem.  May we ever rejoice at our happy lot as children of the true Church; ever in tender charity look with a compassionate eye on those who live but for this world; and continually pray that all may come to bless, to praise and to love the Saviour, who comes to redeem them…Amen

Feast of the Holy Family

December 30, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 01 January, 01 January Saints, Christmas, Holy Family 2 Comments

The special devotion which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of virtue of all Christian households began in the XVIIth century. It started almost simultaneously in Canada and France. — The Association of the Holy Family being founded in Montreal in 1663, and the Daughters of the Holy Family in Paris in 1674. Numerous other congregations and associations under the Patronage of the Holy Family have been established, since that time, and they are spread over the world. The Archconfraternity was established by Pius IX in 1847. In 1893 Leo XIII approved a feast for Canada, and Pope Benedict XV extended the Feast of the Holy Family to the whole Church and ordered its celebration to be kept on the Sunday after the Epiphany.

THE HOLY FAMILY

GREATER DOUBLE/WHITE

Old Calendar – First Sunday After The Epiphany
Within the Octave

From eternity, the Son of God had lived the family life of the Blessed Trinity. At Nazareth, as the Redeemer both of individuals and of families, He lived and made holy the home life that guards divine life in every baptized person.

Problems of family life center mainly in personalities. But social pressures and poverty also add disturbing tensions. Happily, God made marriage a sacrament, which is ministered by husband and wife to one another. Through the sacrament, they communicate to one another those special graces they need for living their enduring and sometimes difficult obligations.

God remains the third partner in every marriage, with His own inalienable rights. In the Holy Family, God Incarnate was the third member. In a Christian family, anywhere in the world, the father is the spiritual head who takes the place of Christ.

Prayer to the Holy Family

This prayer is taken from Prayer Book for Religious, compiled by Fr. F. X. Lasance, S.J. (Benziger Brothers, 1904)

holyfamilyO most loving Jesus, Who by Thy sublime and beautiful virtues of humility, obedience, poverty, modesty, charity, patience and gentleness, and by the example of Thy domestic life, didst bless with peace and happiness the family Thou didst choose on earth, in Thy clemency look down upon this household, humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy. Remember that this family belongs to Thee; for to Thee we have in a special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving kindness; preserve us from danger; give us help in time of need, and grant us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may bless and praise Thee eternally in heaven.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers.

And do thou, O glorious Patriarch, St. Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer, by the hands of Mary, our prayers to Jesus. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Family Holy-family

Domine Iesu Christe, qui Mariae et Ioseph subditus, domesticam vitam ineffabilibus virtutibus consecrasti: fac nos, utriusque auxilio, Familiae sanctae tuae exemplis instrui et consortium consequi sempiternum: Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who, being made subject to Mary and Joseph, didst consecrate domestic life by Thine ineffable virtues; grant that we, with the assistance of both, may be taught by the example of Thy Holy Family and may attain to its everlasting fellowship. Who livest and reignest forever. Amen.

~~~
Consecration to the Holy Family
O Jesus, ouholyfamily-2r most loving Redeemer, who having come to enlighten the world with Thy teaching and example, didst will to pass the greater part of Thy life in humility and subjection to Mary and Joseph in the poor home of Nazareth, thus sanctifying the Family that was to be an example for all Christian families, graciously receive our family as it dedicates and consecrates itself to Thee this day. Do Thou protect us, guard us and establish amongst us Thy holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by living according to the divine pattern of Thy family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness.
Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by the kindly intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings.
O Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, help us by thy prayers in all our spiritual and temporal needs; that so we may be enabled to praise our divine Savior Jesus, together with Mary and thee, for all eternity. Amen.
Say an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be three times.
Mother Teresa’s Prayer for Families
Heavenly Father, you have given us the model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth.  Help us, O Loving Father,to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace and joy reign.
May it be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, revived with joy.  Help us to stay together in joy and sorrow in family prayer.
Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our families, especially in their distressing disguise.
May the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus make our hearts humble like his and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way.
May we love one another as God loves each one of us, more and more each day, and forgive each other’s faults as you forgive our sins.
Help us, O Loving Father, to take whatever you give and give whatever you take with a big smile.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and protect us.
Amen.
“The Holy Family is the icon of the domestic church called to pray together. The family is the domestic church and must be the first school of prayer. If one does not learn to pray in the family, it will be difficult to fill this void, so I want to invite you to rediscover the beauty of praying together as a family in the school of the Holy Family of Nazareth and, in that way, to become truly one heart and one soul, a true family.” ~Pope Benedict XVI
{HAPPY}
Our happiness is found in Him, alone.  Dad and I give thanks for the stripping that He has allowed. We have been freed to seek Him first with limited attachments.  This year was no different, we had no budget for gifts.  Our eyes were solely on Him.  All were joyful and ready to celebrate His birth with humble surroundings.
The good Lord was generous and blessed us through Dad’s parents.  They gave us cash during the week of Christmas.  It was enough to cover our monthly expenses and provide some modest gifts for the kids and loved ones.  DEO GRATIAS!
 PC250002
Christkindl exchange.  Each sibling had a max of $5 that could be spent on their Christkindl.  Dad took them shopping.  The girls received yarn, on sale at JoAnns.  The boys received a box set of cars.  The total of the exchange was $21.
Sweetie and Sparkles received a toy horse and couldn’t have been happier. (Costco – $9.98 ea)
Dragonfly got a set of tractors from his Christkindls – all the kids. (Wal-Mart – $5)
Papi was so excited with a simple dino book that I couldn’t capture a clear shot of him. (TJ Maxx – $3)PC250018
Rose got a plush robe. (Kohls – $20.  It was a bit more than we would have liked but it worked out.  Between her robe and 2 Fisher Price Nativity Sets ($13 ea), we earned $10 Kohl’s Cash)
Dad received the one and only item he requested, gloves. (Costco – $12)
I was happy with my gift of a clean house pre-Christmas and a coupon for a guaranteed clean house for the remainder of the Christmas season.  In other words, I am exempt from cleaning until post-Baby G. (PRICELESS)
We look forward to keeping CHRIST in Christmas and continuing our celebrations for the entire duration of the Christmas season.  The Christmas season does not begin until the first Mass at Christmas Eve, and doesn’t end liturgically until the Octave of the Epiphany on January 14. It goes on in the spiritual sense until Candlemas on February 2, when all celebrations of Christ’s Childhood give way to Septuagesima and Lent.
Our Christmas photos were taken early this year with an impromptu trip to the park since our scheduled shoot didn’t work out. I was happy with the photos but a bit disappointed with the photo cards. I put it off for far too long then life happened and the Christmas cards almost got nixed. Dad encouraged me to get them done in the eleventh hour. I opted for a simple, less customized, inexpensive option – Costco 1hr photo. I paid $15 or 50 6×7.5 prints with sturdy silver-lined envelopes.
The cards above are some of the outtakes from Shutterfly, before Dad made his way to the hospital.  The card below is a slightly modified version of my family’s Costco photo card.
CHRIST in Christmas
December 20, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Advent, Christmas 8 Comments
I’m participating in the Keeping Christ in Christmas Blog Carnival, hosted by Arma Dei/Equipping Catholic Families, Raising (& Teaching) Little Saints, Truly Rich Mom. We’ll be sharing different ways, tips, stories and real-life experiences that will help us focus on Jesus as the Reason for the Christmas season. Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of carnival entries.
greatest-nativity
Keeping our eyes on Christ is my family’s daily goal.  During Advent it becomes even more important for us to work on keeping Christ in Christmas.
Our primary objective for keeping Christ in Christmas is to observe each liturgical season in it’s entirety.
Here are a few examples on how we try to keep the focus on Him during Advent & Christmas.
~~~

    • Advent 2012 – Dec. 2 – 24

The focus of Advent is preparation for the coming of the Lord — both in commemoration of His Nativity and His coming again at the end of time… The Christmas season does not begin until the first Mass at Christmas Eve, and doesn’t end liturgically until the Octave of the Epiphany on January 14. It goes on in the spiritual sense until Candlemas on February 2, when all celebrations of Christ’s Childhood give way to Septuagesima and Lent.

Sole focus is on preparing our hearts for Jesus.

      • Simple practices that help us keep this a penitential season.
      • Limited celebratory events.  No extracurriculars.  Similar to our Lenten practices.
      • Advent List, Christkindl, Jesse Tree, Christmas, Novena, and more.
      • We take a mock pilgrimage, Journey to Bethlehem.  Journey To Bethlehem is an interactive walking tour from the recreated town of Nazareth to Bethlehem.  The journey Gloria Holy Reflectionsrecreates the events that happened on the evening of Christ’s birth.
      • Decorations are focused on Christ, only.  Nativities are the primary décor.  The lights must wait for Christmas.
      • Christmas music is limited (to the best of our ability) until Christmas day.
      • Gift giving is not emphasized.  That means no wish lists or presents stuffed under the tree.  Instead, acts of charity are discussed and encouraged.
          • Absolutely no Santa Claus.
      • All family members receive the sacrament of Confession during the Third and Fourth Sunday of Advent.
      • All family members present their hearts (gifts) during the Third and Fourth Sunday of Advent.  This is done by way of Adoration.  Each leaves a wooden heart at the nativity manager in Church.  The heart symbolizes their offering for Jesus. Our hearts are with Christ at His time of birth.  The hearts are picked up during the Christmas season and placed on the family altar as a reminder of our offering.
    • Christmas 2012 – Dec. 25 – Feb. 2

40 days after giving birth, Mary goes to the Temple to be purified and to “redeem” Jesus per the Old Testament Law of the firstborn. Christmas truly ends as a Season with Candlemas and the beginning of Septuagesima.

      • Put a small offering of gifts under the tree for the children on Christmas Eve.
      • Visit Our Lord and Savior at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on Christmas Day.14820268-brussels--june-24-nativity-paint-on-the-wood-from-saint-antoine-church-on-march-2012-in-brussels
        • We visit Him before we ever turn towards a present. No opening any gifts on Christmas eve or Christmas morning – CHRIST IS FIRST!
      • Have a birthday party for Jesus on Christmas morning.
        • Happy birthday, cake, and the works.
      • Keep the Christmas decor up for the entire span of the Christmas season.  (Many think we’re nuts or lazy but it’s done all for His glory!)
      • REJOICE!!! Sing and play Christmas music all season!
      • Increase daily Mass attendance.

It is, that, from the day itself of our Saviour’s Birth even to the day of our Lady’s Purification, there is, in the Calendar,an extraordinary richness of Saints’ Feasts, doing homage to the master feast of Bethlehem, and clustering in adoring love round the Crib of the Infant-God. ~ “The Mystery of Christmas” from Dom Gueranger’s “The Liturgical Year”
