St. Monica ~ Hope

October 5, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Hope, Little Flowers, St. Monica

hope craft page

Oct.  2 was our second Little Flowers meeting of the 2010-11 Session.  We had 20 girls attend Mass as a group.  They wore their handkerchiefs or veils and sashes.  The final head count for the meeting was 27 girls.  We were missing 4 girls.  It is official, we have reached the max capacity for this year’s session, 31 girls.  Praise be to God!  september fun 107 JOy

SAINT  & VIRTUE STUDY:

We recapped on last month’s saint and virtue, St. Catherine of Sienna & Faith.  HR recited the Act of Faith.  MJ recited the memory verse, Hebrews 11:1.  All the girls recalled the flower, saint and virtue.

Father L had perfect timing and arrived just in time to introduce the girls to St. Monica.  He also recapped on his earlier talk regarding angels, with an emphasize on Guardian Angels since today st-monicawas the Feast of Guardian Angels.  The girls received a blessing before his departure.

I briefly reflected on Father’s intro to St. Monica.  The girls learned that St. Monica was married to a pagan, had three children;  a young pious son, a daughter who became a nun, and St. Augustine (her son) who lived a sinful life.  They learned that St. Monica never lost hope in God.  She continued to pray and do penance for her husband and especially her son.  Her prayers were answered on this earth, her husband converted on his death bed and St. Augustine more than converted at age 29.  She was filled with joy and died shortly after.

Next,I introduced the girls to the second theological virtue, hope.  We discussed the definition of hope based on the Catechism  of the Catholic Church.

1817 Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit.

I also used a diagram to display hope.  The idea was shared by Jessica at Shower of Roses.

The girls eagerly shared the places that they desired to go.  Majority of the girls selected Disney Land.  GC selected New York.  When asked what difficult task may need to be completed in order to make it to their destination, the girls responded with, “cleaning.”

They reflected on the fact that the tasks suggested would not be too difficult to complete with the hope of being able to attend their desired attraction.  Their selected destinations were then replaced with our ultimate goal, Heaven.  The girls were encouraged to continue to do difficult tasks with the hope that they are moving closer to Heaven.september fun 056 JOY

The girls were then prepped to complete their craft, planting an ivy clipping in hope that it will take root and grow to be formed around the heart form.  My dear Mr. and many of the moms provided help at the outdoor planting station.  The girls are great gardeners and were very eager to get their hands dirty.  girls working on topiariesgroup 2 working on topiaries

Each girl received a linen (seed starting) pot.  They filled their pots 3/4 high with soil.  Then they planted the ivy clipping into the soil.  They placed the heart form into their soil.  The girls filled their pots with more soil and watered.  Each girl attempted to attach the grown ivy clipping to the heart.  They are were very pleased with their creations.cc watering her topiary

The potted ivy will need to remain in the shade outside.  It will need to be watered frequently.  The new growth should be trained around the heart form.  It will eventually need to be repotted.

The clippings should take root in 10-20 days.  More links to care instructions can be found here.

Lastly, the girls returned to the room for some housekeeping.  Each girl who attended last month’s meeting received a picture for their binder cover.  I will need to create new binder covers for some returning members.  Each member received their Hope Handouts.  Many of the handouts can be reprinted from the links below.

Hope Topiary

October 4, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, Gardening, Little Flowers, St. Monica

Ivy is the flower/plant that coordinates with Hope – Little Flowers Wreath I.  Ivy topiaries are my favorite.  It was an easy choice for me, I decided to have the girls plant an ivy clipping for St. Monica & Hope.   The girls will care for their ivy plants in hope that they will take root and grow to be formed around the heart topiary.IMG_0162

Ivy topiaries will last and last, given proper care. Bright indirect light and moderately moist soil will keep ivy happy indoors.
The Ivy Heart Topiary is a  low maintenance houseplant that grows quickly and has been trained on the topiary and only needs occasional pruning or guiding to keep it’s shape. Place this topiary in bright indirect light and keep the soil evenly moist.   – Caring For Your Topiary

St. Catherine of Siena ~ Faith

St. Catherine of Siena meeting table

I held my first Little Flowers meeting for the 2010-2011 year on Saturday, Sept, 11.  My parish’s Little Flowers groups has doubled.  I now have 27 girls, 23 of which were present.

LF group blur

I have decided to complete Wreath I this year.  Our first meeting was on St. Catherine of Siena & Faith.  As always, we attended mass prior to our meeting.

st catherine faith craft pageThis is a virtue memory page.  My inspiration was taken from Jessica.

The meeting started with some social time and snack.  They ate their sunflower seeds as we discussed the significance of the sunflower.

sunflower lookin gat the sun“Our faith may be compared to this flower, since its gaze is ever fixed above, and turned towards the glorious sun of divine truth.” ~ Fr. Lasance – Catholic Girl’s Guide

St. Catherine of Siena was then introduced.  She was the last one standing.  That is , she had the most siblings out of all the Little Flowers present, 24.  CP was a close second with 11 siblings.  The girls were amazed with this little fact about St. Catherine of Siena.

Saint Catherine of Sienna Exchanging Her Heart with Christ ” by Giovanni di Paolo, part of a three part altar panel, hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

We covered; St. Catherine of Siena’s early call to serve God at age 6;  her joyful demeanor and willingness to please; her nick name – Joy; her parents’ wish for her to marry; her hair cutting episode in response to her parents constant desire for her to marry*; St. Catherine’s private visions; the ring that was placed on her hand by Mary and Jesus which was invisible to all; her call to inform the Pope to move back to Rome; and the stigmata that did not become visible until the time of her death at age 33.

father l blur

Father L visited the girls.  He spoke of the LF’s patron saint, St. Therese and St. Catherine of Siena.  He clarified a concern that one of the Little Flowers had regarding St. Catherine cutting her hair to show her parents that she was not going to marry.  The Little Flower questioned if this act was disobedient.*  Father explained that we are all to follow God’s call and that parents are supposed to lead us to God’s will.  Parents are not supposed to force their children into a vocation.  He of course, put it much more eloquently.

Father gave the girls a special blessing (that extends to their family) before departing.  We are blessed to have devoted shepherds.  Please continue to keep Father L and all the FSSP priests in your prayers.

Before moving on to our craft we played a a nice game of musical chairs.  We used the Little Flowers Memory Verse CD as music.  MB, AA, Sweetie and EH were the winners (displaced from their chairs first).  They were awarded the privilege of taking the craft supplies to their table.

I chose a simple craft to start with, Key Tag Necklace.  The girls did a great job assembling their necklaces and were pleased with their creations.

LF Wreath I binderEach new member received their Little Flowers binder.  This binder is to be used for their entire stay as a LF.   All members were given the handouts for Faith.  They are to work on the activity sheet as mom sees fit.  If participating, each girl will report back to me once their mom/father deems them worthy of having earned the badge for the virtue of Faith.

The binder is an Avery Durable 1.5 inch binder.  I purchase the binders at Wal-Mart once the school items go on clearance.  I do not pay more than $2.50 per binder.  I’m able to find them there every year in a variety of colors.

The meeting was wrapped up with a treat, sunflower cupcakes.  They speak for themselves…..YUMMY!  (Just ask EH!  She loved them so much that she wanted to eat the paper.)

The meeting was a success!

I give all thanks and praise to GOD.

My Little Flowers group has started their 2010-2011.  There are 27 girls ranging in ages from 5 to 8.  My returning girls are skilled crafters.  However, I wanted to gauge the skill level of the new LF girls.  This was the perfect craft, key tag necklaces.  I found my inspiration from another blog.

I decided to make this cupcake for Little Flowers Wreath I ~ St. Catherine of Siena and the virtue of faith.  I found the idea at Skip To My Lou.

SUPPLIES:

  • yellow cake mix
  • buttercream frosting
  • chocolate frosting
  • chocolate puff cereal
  • cupcake liners
  • Golden Yellow gel icing color
  • star tip for icing

DIRECTIONS:

Bake cupcakes as desired. I used a box mix of yellow cake.

sunflower cupcake design 1

Frost the middle of the cake with chocolate frosting.

sunflower cupcake design 2

Dip the frosted cupcake into chocolate puff cereal.  Save this step for later if you plan to refrigerate the cupcake.  If not, the cereal will loose it’s crunch and become stale.sunflower cupcake design 3

Using a star tip, frost around the chocolate top of the cupcake with buttercream frosting that has been dyed yellow using Golden Yellow gel icing color.

Here is a great buttercream frosting recipe.  1 batch is enough for approximately 36 cupcakes.
