2012 Lenten Calendar

February 18, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Lenten Calendar

O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despondency, lust of power, and idle talk; But grant rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. ~ St. Ephraem, Doctor of the Church (d. 373)  This prayer is often prayed with a prostration after each stanza.

*The calendar can be printed with a purple or white background. The links to the calendar downloads are listed at the bottom of this post.

I opted for a more subdued calendar this year.  This calendar corresponds with the Liturgical Calendar – 2012 of the Traditional Roman Rite.  I’ve included saints that are not celebrated in time of Lent for my family’s private devotion.

In order to keep up the character of mournfulness and austerity which is so well suited to Lent, the Church, for many centuries, admitted very few feasts into this portion of her year, inasmuch as there is always joy where there is even a spiritual feast…During the last few centuries, she has admitted several other feasts into that portion of her general calendar which coincides with Lent; still, she observes a certain restriction, out of respect for the ancient practice. ~“The Mystery of Lent” – Extraordinary Form (Tridentine) from Dom Gueranger’s “The Liturgical Year”

Here is a key for the calendar:

  1. Saints listed with a (larger) picture (formatted in the center of the calendar square) are from the Liturgical Calendar 2012.
  2. Saints with (slightly smaller) pictures (formatted in the right of the calendar square)are those listed in the Roman Missal.
  3. Saints listed without a picture come from the Breviary.

The following prayers are also included on the calendar.

O Lord Jesus! who spent forty days in the desert without food or drink, and didst permit Thy self to be tempted by the evil spirit, give me, I beseech Thee by that holy fast, the grace to combat, during this holy season of Lent, under Thy protection, against intemperance, and to resist the suggestions of Satan that I may win the crown of eternal life. Amen. ~Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine’s The Church’s Year

Prayer Before A Crucifix ~ En ego, O bone et dulcissime Iesu
Behold, O good and most sweet Jesus, I fall upon my knees before Thee, and with most fervent desire beg and beseech Thee that Thou wouldst impress upon my heart a lively sense of faith, hope and charity, true repentance for my sins, and a firm resolve to make amends. And with deep affection and grief, I reflect upon Thy five wounds, having before my eyes that which Thy prophet David spoke about Thee, o good Jesus: "They have pierced my hands and feet, they have counted all my bones." Amen.

This prayer calls to mind Psalm 21, in particular verses 17 and 18, which concern our Lord’s Passion. A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful on any Friday of Lent or Passiontide who after Communion piously recite this prayer before an image of Christ crucified. On other days of the year the indulgence is partial.

You may download and print the calendar for your personal use.  I only ask that you offer a decade of the Rosary for Priests of the the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP).

We are in exile without Christ

February 6, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Lent, Septuagesima Sunday

Assist me, O Jesus, with Thy grace that, following St. Paul’s example, I may be anxious, by the constant pious practice of virtue and prayer, to arrive at perfection and to enter heaven.

SEPTUAGESIMA SUNDAY

PURPLE

Counting Easter as “one,” count 10 Sundays back from Easter and mark that day as the beginning of Septuagesima. The three Sundays of this Season are referred to, respectively, as Septuagesima Sunday, Sexagesima Sunday, and Quinquagesima Sunday.

This Season (Septuagesima), whose name name means “Seventy” and which recalls the Babylonian Exile, lasts from Septuagesima Sunday to Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) inclusive (16 calendar days). Its color is violet. ~ Fish Eaters

The calendar of the liturgical year will soon bring us to the commemoration of the Passion and Resurrection of our Redeemer; we are but nine weeks from these great solemnities. It is time for the Christian to be preparing his soul for a fresh visit from his Saviour; a visit even more sacred and more important than that He so mercifully paid us at His Birth. ~ The Liturgical Year by Dom Guéranger, O.S.B.

Palm Sunday

April 22, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Holy Week, Lent, Palm Sunday

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion, shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem: BEHOLD THY KING will come to thee, the just and saviour: he is poor, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. And I will destroy the chariot out of Ephraim, and the horse out of Jerusalem, and the bow for war shall be broken: and he shall speak peace to the Gentiles, and his power shall be from sea to sea, and from the rivers even to the end of the earth. ~ Zacharias 9:9-10
palm sunday

Second Sunday of the Passion

Before the Mass is the Blessing of the Palms, which includes an Antiphon, Psalms, and Gospel reading. Then comes the Procession with hymns, when we carry the palms either around the church or outside, weather permitting, and then the Mass, during which there is a very long reading sung in 3 parts by 3 deacons (or priest and deacons such as the case may be) — a long recitation of the Passion, including Matthew 26:36-75 and Matthew 27:1-60. Prepare for a very long Mass!

Carrying palms… in procession goes way back into the Old Testament, where it was not only approved but commanded by God at the very foundation of the Old Testament religion. In the fall of the year, after the harvest, when the people gathered for the Feast of Tabernacles God said in Leviticus 23:40:

And you shall take to you on the first day the fruits of the fairest tree, and branches of palm trees, and boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook: And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God.

We made it, praise God!  Dad and Papi were sick but they had a brief reprieve.

I’m so very thankful for the rich liturgical customs that we are able to take part in.  The children are becoming more in awe of our faith, with every celebration.  I pray that their love for Our Lord and Holy Mother Church continues to blossom.

flat tire

When I say brief, I mean brief.  We had to stay at church longer than desired since my tire went flat when I arrived at Mass.  We all gave thanks to God for getting us to Mass safely.  We were also blessed with two very wonderful  young men who volunteered to fix the tire.  Dad slept on the hour drive home (since he worked a night shift) and two more children became ill on the ride home.  We are still recovering but embracing our Holy Week.

ALL FOR JESUS!

Holy Week

April 17, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Holy Week, Lent

clip_image002

We are entering Holy Week true to our family tradition, we’re sick.

We pray to persevere and set our hearts solely on Him.  All activities outside of the home and Church have come to a halt.  We withdraw from the world during Holy Week – for reflection and reparation.  No sports, field trips, extracurricular, visits from friends, etc…  Only work (for Dad) and Mass (for all who find reprieve from their illness).

God willing, we will be able to follow the following schedule.

image

Let us hope that, by God’s mercy, the holy time we are now entering upon will work such a happy change in us, that, on the day of judgment, we may confidently fix our eyes on Him we are now about to contemplate crucified by the hands of sinners. The death of Jesus puts the whole of nature in commotion; the midday sun is darkened, the earth is shaken to its very foundations, the rocks are split: may it be that our hearts, too, be moved, and pass from indifference to fear, from fear to hope, and, at length, from hope to love; so that, having gone down, with our Crucified, to the very depths of sorrow, we may deserve to rise again with Him unto light and joy, beaming with the brightness of His Resurrection, and having within ourselves the pledge of a new life, which shall then die no more!
