Red, White, and Blue

July 1, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, July 4th, Patriotic

I love ribbon!  I’ve been creating hair bows and crafting with ribbons since I was a child.  I’ve come up with numerous ways to re-purpose the cardboard spools that the ribbon comes on.  Ribbon bracelets are one of my favs.

They’re quick and easy!  They don’t (usually) require a trip to the craft store.  They can be made for all occasions.

Supplies:
  • ribbon
  • cardboard ribbon spool
  • scissors
  • hot-glue gun

Directions:
  1. cut ribbon to 18-32 inches.  ribbon length varies – depending the size of the spool and width of the ribbon
  2. hot-glue the end of the ribbon to the inside of the (clean) ribbon spool.
  3. wrap the ribbon around the spool, slightly overlapping the ribbon.
  4. secure the ribbon to the spool with hot-glue, as needed.
  5. trim the end of the ribbon as needed. secure the end of the ribbon to the inside of the spool using hot-glue.
Embellish and wear!

June 30, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, Sacred Heart of Jesus

Sacred Heart of Jesus Picture Frame
Kimberly’s creations were my inspiration.
Supplies:
  • picture frame
  • wooden heart
  • wooden cross
  • scissors
  • hot-glue gun
  • orange vellum or construction paper
  • gold paint pen
  • wood burning tool (optional)
  • red paint
  • paint brush

Directions:

  1. use the wood burning tool to make the crown of thorns on the heart
  2. paint the heart – red.
  3. color/paint the wooden cross – gold
  4. cut a flame from the orange vellum
  5. write, with the gold paint pen, the desired inscription on the frame
  6. adhere the cross, flame, and heart to the frame, using a hot glue gun

You can insert a holy card or picture.  We decided to use our frames for prayer intentions.  We use a dry-erase pen to write our prayer intentions on the glass.

Last Supper

April 1, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts

last supper kitchen view crop I have been searching for the ideal picture, plaque….of the Last Supper.  I desired something in my price range and not too large.  I have limited wall space in my kitchen.  I’ve been searching the thrift stores and yard sales.

I saw a gorgeous painting of the Last Supper at Costco, last Thursday.  A traveling vendor was showcasing canvas artwork.  She had beautiful images of the Immaculate Heart and Sacred Heart.  I wish I could recall the vendor’s name.  The Last Supper image was too big and definitely out of my price range, $170.  Still, I was inspired.

I found a lovely image online when I got home.  I still can’t recall where I found it.  I’m almost positive that it came from one of the sources below.  I’ll be sure to update my source once I find it.

last supper image I printed the image and decoupaged it to a tile.  I used this technique minus the top coats.  I did not want my image to bleed and I wasn’t concerned about sealing the ink-jet image.

Lenten Family Joy Journal

March 16, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, Gifts, JOY Journal, Lent

Through the traditional practices of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, which are an expression of our commitment to conversion, Lent teaches us how to live the love of Christ in an ever more radical way. ~ Pope Benedict XVI, 2011 Lenten Message (3)

Finding JOY in my life has been a call of mine for sometime.  I’ve been recording my JOY for several years now, in efforts to grow a JOYfilled heart.  It has been a much needed spiritual practice for me.
I have recently been renewed by friends, Ann and other bloggers.
Jenny at A Moment Captured and Melody at Blossoming Joy inspired me to step it up for Lent.

In order to undertake more seriously our journey towards Easter and prepare ourselves to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord – the most joyous and solemn feast of the entire liturgical year… ~ Pope Benedict XVI, 2011 Lenten Message (2)

Here is the JOY Journal that I made for my family.  We’ve been entering our JOY each day after family prayer.
