We are in exile without Christ

February 6, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Lent, Septuagesima Sunday

Assist me, O Jesus, with Thy grace that, following St. Paul’s example, I may be anxious, by the constant pious practice of virtue and prayer, to arrive at perfection and to enter heaven.

SEPTUAGESIMA SUNDAY

PURPLE

Counting Easter as “one,” count 10 Sundays back from Easter and mark that day as the beginning of Septuagesima. The three Sundays of this Season are referred to, respectively, as Septuagesima Sunday, Sexagesima Sunday, and Quinquagesima Sunday.

This Season (Septuagesima), whose name name means “Seventy” and which recalls the Babylonian Exile, lasts from Septuagesima Sunday to Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) inclusive (16 calendar days). Its color is violet. ~ Fish Eaters

The calendar of the liturgical year will soon bring us to the commemoration of the Passion and Resurrection of our Redeemer; we are but nine weeks from these great solemnities. It is time for the Christian to be preparing his soul for a fresh visit from his Saviour; a visit even more sacred and more important than that He so mercifully paid us at His Birth. ~ The Liturgical Year by Dom Guéranger, O.S.B.

Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary

January 31, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Candlemas, Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tis the festival on which the Church venerates the humility and obedience of Mary who, though not subject to the law of Moses, which required purification and presentation in the temple, yet subjected herself to it. From this comes the name Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. It is also called Candlemas, because before Mass on this day the candles used in divine service are blessed and carried in procession. ~ The Church Year

It has been forty days, we are gearing up to officially wrap up Christmastide.  Feb 2, the Feast of the Purification, is the end of the Christmas Season in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.  We will be removing the Christmas tree, nativities, Christmas cards, Christmas books, etc…  We will attend Mass and observe a day of Marian simplicity.

We will work as a family in the home and yard.  All technology use will be limited.  We will set a structure for the day, centered around prayer.  Our day and prayer will culminate with a Solemn Mass.

O Blessed Mother of God, who went up to the Temple according to the law with your offering of little white doves, pray for me that I too may keep the law and be pure in heart like you.

Sweet heart of Mary, be my salvation.

presentation

Heavenly Father! look down from Thy throne of mercy upon the face of Thy Anointed in whom Thou art well pleased. Behold, He is this day offered to Thee in the temple for the sins of His brethren. Let this offering please Thee, and move Thee to have compassion on us sinners. In consideration of His humility and obedience, forgive us our pride and disobedience, and grant us, that purified by His blood, we may one day, having like Simeon departed this life in peace, behold Thee as the eternal Light which shall never be extinguished in the temple of Thy glory, be presented to Thee by Mary, our beloved Mother, and love and praise Thee forever. Amen.

SAINT VALENTINE
February 14 –  feast of St. Valentine in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.
Priest and Martyr
SIMPLE / RED
During the persecution under Emperor Claudius II, Valentine, a zealous priest in Rome, ministered boldly to the martyr. He was arrested and taken before the prefect, who made tempting offers to induce him to apostatize. Finding that he was wasting his breath, the prefect condemned Valentine to death. The beheading took place on February 14, about the year 270. The true follower of Christ ignores worldly caution when he is called upon to bear witness to Jesus. “The inclination of the flesh is death, but the inclination of the spirit, life and peace” (Rom. 8:6)

Patron of Sweethearts, Young People, Love & Happy Marriages
Dear Saint and glorious Martyr, who are so popular with lovers, be kind to those whom we love and to us. Teach us to love unselfishly and to find great joy in giving. Enable all true lovers to bring out the best in each other. Let them love each other in God and God in each other. Amen.

St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

February 27, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Our Lady of Sorrows, Passionists, St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

“Love Mary! She is loveable, faithful, constant. She will never let herself be outdone in love, but will ever remain supreme. If you are in danger, she will hasten to free you. If you are troubled, she will console you. If you are sick, she will bring you relief. If you are in need, she will help you. She does not look to see what kind of person you have been. She simply comes to a heart that wants to love her. She comes quickly and opens her merciful heart to you, embraces you and consoles and serves you. She will even be at hand to accompany you on the trip to eternity.”  ~Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother

SAINT GABRIEL OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS Confessor
Traditional February 27

Gabriel, born at Assisi in Umbria, and called Francis in memory of his seraphic fellow-citizen, gave evidence of great intelléctual gifts.  As a young man, when by the gift of God’s mercy he had already been called to a more perfect life, he fell ill and began to weary of the vanity of the world.  Entering the Passionist congregation, he chose the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, in order to keep in mind continually both the joys and the sorrows of the Virgin Mary.  Honouring her in every way, he was accustomed particularly to contemplating her as worn out and afflicted by Jesus’ sufferings, with such sorrow that he shed a flood of tears.  He kept his virginity intact, and, following the strict usage of his congregation, he lived wholly crucified to the world, for God alone.  Thus he completed his short life in the exercise of all virtues ; consumed by the fire of charity rather than by the force of his illness and refreshed by the aid of God’s Mother, he went to heaven in the year 1862.  Pope Pius X numbered him among the Blessed ; Benedict XV, among the Saints ; and Pius XI extended his Office and Mass to the Universal Church.

Commemoration of SAINT GABRIEL POSSENTI
Gabriel Possenti (1838-62), the son of a distinguished Italian lawyer, entered the novitiate of the Passionist Fathers, receiving in religion the name of Brother Gabriel of Our lady of Sorrows. The story of the remaining six years of this young saint’s life is largely a record of an extraordinary effort to attain spiritual perfection in small things, but his devotion to Mary was exceptional. Pope Leo XIII said of him: “Because of his filial love for Mary at the foot of the cross, he deserves to take his place by St. John, the beloved disciple, to whom Jesus in His dying hour commended His Mother.”
O God, You taught blessed Gabriel to meditate constantly on the sorrows of Your most sweet Mother, and You exalted him by glorious virtues and miracles. Through his prayers and example may we share the sorrows of Your Mother and come to eternal life under Her motherly care; who lives and rules with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

Prayer to Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother
O good St. Gabriel, God inspired you to love the passion of Jesus as it was reflected in the heart of Mary, his mother. By her side, you stood beneath the cross of Jesus, gazing on him as she did, and sharing her compassion.
O St. Gabriel, we wish, like you, to grow in love for God and all his people. Remember us in the trials of our life. Remember especially those who are young and in need.
Support us, all our days, by your holy prayers. And when this life is done, may we join you in heaven in the joyful company of Jesus and Mary.
Amen.

St. Matthias

February 24, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, 05 May, 05 May Saints, Apostles, Nameday, Patron Saint, St. Matthias 1 Comment

Matthias, one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus, was chosen in the place of Judas. St. Matthias preached the Gospel more then thirty years in Judea, Cappadocia, Egypt, and Ethiopia. He was stoned by the Jews in 80.

SAINT MATTHIAS

Apostle

Traditional Calendar – February 24 ~ New Calendar – May 14

DOUBLE, SECOND CLASS / RED

After the Ascension of Jesus, St. Peter proposed to the assembled faithful that they choose a disciple of Christ to fill the place of the traitor Judas in the first missionary band. Lots were drawn, with the result in favor of Matthias. According to one ancient tradition, this missioner labored in Ethiopia and was martyred there. Thus did St. Matthias receive "the crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him" (James 1:12).

matthias588Preface of the Apostles

It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, to entreat Thee humbly, O Lord, that Thou wouldst not desert Thy flock, O everlasting Shepherd, but, through Thy blessed Apostles, wouldst keep it under Thy constant protection; that it may be governed by those same rulers, whom as vicars of Thy work, Thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
