Chair of St. Peter at Antioch

February 20, 2018 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February Saints, Chair of St. Peter, FSSP Leave a Comment

St. Peter was the prince of the apostles and the first pope. Jesus said to him, “You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). The name ‘Peter’ means rock.

SAINT PETER’S CHAIR AT ANTIOCH

FEB. 22 – GREATER DOUBLE / WHITE

1st. Class Feast for FSSP and CSP

This feast commemorates the seven years during which Pope Peter ruled the Church from Antioch before he went to Rome. Since the majority of the Jews had rejected Christianity, Peter left Jerusalem and founded the see of Antioch among the Gentiles. In that large Eastern city, Christianity took deep root, and it was there that the faithful were first called by the name of Christians. After seven years the Vicar of Christ transferred his see to Rome, the very center of the ancient world, so that from it the messengers of salvation might radiate to the uttermost ends of the earth.

Hâc cathedrâ, Petrus quâ sederat ipse, locatum
Maxima Roma Linum primum considere iussit.

(On this chair, where Peter himself had sat,
great Rome first placed Linus and bade him sit.)

“Blessed art thou, Simon BarJona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.” ~ Matt. 16:13-19

The Apostolic Penitentiary, by virtue of the faculties granted to it, has kindly willed to grant (by decree of June 7, 2008 and May 11, 2015, for 7 years as is customary) to the members of the Confraternity of Saint Peter at the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer at the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff).

The feast of St. Peter’s Chair at Rome reminds us that St. Peter started the Christian community in that city. The special chair is a symbol of the authority that was given to him by Jesus. Kings of old sat on thrones and ruled. Peter’s chair is a symbol of his authority from Jesus to rule the Church.

Candlemas

February 19, 2014 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Candlemas, Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary 1 Comment

Tis the festival on which the Church venerates the humility and obedience of Mary who, though not subject to the law of Moses, which required purification and presentation in the temple, yet subjected herself to it. From this comes the name Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. It is also called Candlemas, because before Mass on this day the candles used in divine service are blessed and carried in procession. ~Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine’s, The Church’s Year, INSTRUCTION ON THE FEAST OP THE PURIFICATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, COMMONLY CALLED CANDLEMAS-DAY.

GOSPEL (Luke II. 22-32.) At that time, After the days of Mary’s purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried Jesus to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord. And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves, or two young pigeons. And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Ghost was in him. And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law: he also took him into his arms, and blessed God, and said: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word, in peace: Because my eyes have seen thy salvation: which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

~~~
PRAYER Heavenly Father! look down from Thy throne of mercy upon the face of Thy Anointed in whom Thou art well pleased. Behold, He is this day offered to Thee in the temple for the sins of His brethren. Let this offering please Thee, and move Thee to have compassion on us sinners. In consideration of His humility and obedience, forgive us our pride and disobedience, and grant us, that purified by His blood, we may one day, having like Simeon departed this life in peace, behold Thee as the eternal Light which shall never be extinguished in the temple of Thy glory, be presented to Thee by Mary, our beloved Mother, and love and praise Thee forever. Amen.
Sharing the LOVE
February 15, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, Family Night, Marriage, St. Valentine, St. Valentine's Day
"Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor… Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting." ~Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
My family sought to share our Love of Christ with others on this special day – the feast day of our 2012 Patron Saint, St. Valentine.
~~~

The day started with breakfast delivered in bed.  I couldn’t stand to be away from my loves so I took my breakfast downstairs.  My family ate together and shared our love.

Dad presented me with his homemade chocolate dipped strawberries and apples.  He was so thoughtful in buying the supplies and sneaking them in the house without me knowing.  He even used gluten-free chocolate chips.  Dad stood up late to make the treats with the help of Sparkles.  They were delish—much too good for children!

“What is the mark of love for your neighbor? Not to seek what is for your own benefit, but what is for the benefit of the one loved, both in body and in soul.” ~St. Basil the Great

Then my family went for some fun and fellowship on this blessed feast day ~ bowling & pizza in the park.

It was a blessed day shared with others, in thanksgiving for God’s love and the Love in which we have for Him.

Dad and I are looking forward to a in-home date night this evening.  We will bring out the Love Envelope, open a bottle of wine that we purchased from our getaway and share some sweet treats.

St. Scholastica

February 10, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 02 February, 02 February Saints, St. Scholastica

imageSt. Scholastica

Virgin

St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the Patriarch of Western monasticism. She was born in Umbria, Italy, about 480. Under Benedict’s direction, Scholastica founded a community of nuns near the great Benedictine monastery Monte Cassino. We are told that Scholastica "could be sated or wearied with the words of grace which flowed from St. Benedict’s lips." Inspired by Benedict’s teaching, his sister devoted her whole life to seeking and serving God. St. Scholastica died in the peace of Christ in the year 547. Tradition holds that at her death her soul ascended to heaven in the form of a dove.

St. Scholastica Prayer

O God, to show us where innocence leads, you made the soul of your virgin Saint Scholastica soar to heaven like a dove in flight. Grant through her merits and her prayers that we may so live in innocence as to attain to joys everlasting. This we ask through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
