Homeschool Graduation Checklist

June 3, 2013 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: College, Graduation, Homeschooling, Homeschooling in High School, Rose, Rose GFG 1 Comment

Rose has completed her homeschool education.  She has diligently Victorius Grad Announcement from Tiny Printsdiscerned her next step.  God’s provisions have been made by way of benefactors (family and friends).  We walk in faith, asking for His grace with each step we take.

We continue to check-off tasks on our list as we close on the homeschool chapter of Rose’s life.

  • Spiritual Direction (constant) – we join Rose in her discernment prayer.

…I know that I am incapable of discerning what may be best for me; therefore I cast myself into Thy arms, beseeching Thee, my God, Who hast sent me into this world only to love and serve Thee, to direct by Thy grace every moment and action of my life to the glorious end of my creation… Thy good Spirit lead me into the right way, and Thy adorable providence place me, not where I may be happiest, according to the world, but in that state in which I Shall love and serve Thee most perfectly, and meet with most abundant means for working out my salvation. This is all that I ask and all that I desire; for what would it avail me to gain the whole world, if, in the end, I were to lose my soul and to be so unfortunate as to prefer temporal advantages and worldly honors to the enjoyment of Thy divine presence in a happy eternity? …

  • Senior Pictures ~ taken at our family’s annual school picture day outing.  I was hoping for a spring photo session but I couldn’t pull it off with all the busy work schedules.
  • College Application ~ completed with the understanding that it would leave God room to move in her life despite her inclination to further her domestic skills, at home, for her ultimate vocation of becoming a wife and mother.  We sought a college that was an extension of what we sought to accomplish in our home and education.
  • Finals ~ were exactly that, final – NO more home exams.
  • College Interview ~ was done via web meeting since traveling was not an option — I was 8 months pregnant.  Again, Rose moved forward with the process with an open heart for God to take action.
  • College Acceptance ~  was a beautiful consolation to Rose and the entire family.  We opted for Rose to apply to only one college.  We were very selective since we believe college is not a necessary occasion of sin for Rose.  Rose trusts that her vocation is to be a wife and mother.  She very much wants to give her first fruits and not take the windy path to answer this call.  She has discerned if a certain college education would best equip her to do His work, aiding in the restoration of Christendom, starting within the family.

Rose - college acceptance JOY

  • College Visit – was another sweet consolation along this journey.

2013-05-09

  • Graduation – this coming Saturday, Rose will be participating in a celebration within our parish.  A High Mass will be celebrated, guest commencement speaker (thanks to some well-connected moms), and reception.
  • Graduation Announcements – have arrived and will be sent off this week.  We felt the announcements would be a nice way to share our joy and Rose’s accomplishment.  It’s always done for the brick-and-mortar schools, why not for homeschoolers, too.  Rose designed her announcements from the great selection offered through Tiny Prints.  We enjoyed the process.  Their quality, designs, and speedy delivery are top notch—worth every penny.  Click here to view the entire collection of High School Announcements offered at Tiny Prints.  Sheer Chevron - Tiny Prints This was my choice for announcements.  Rose opted for a different design.
  • Graduation Celebration – we are planning a dinner at a local restaurant.  It was rather last minute so the restaurant was not our first choice and the guest list will be small.  It’s a celebration, nonetheless.
  • Start a new list, College Prep – it’s going to be a busy summer.

Victorius Grad back

We received our announcements from Tiny Prints in exchange for our review but that was not an incentive for us to send people their way.  In fact, we have always endorsed Tiny Prints to all our local friends and family.

Living the Liturgical Rhythm and More

We seek to fully immerse our family into the rich traditions of our Catholic faith, including traditional devotions.  We desire our family to live a life that intimately follows the liturgical rhythm, centered on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We pray to foster a Catholic Culture so that we are able to grow in wisdom, love, and service to Jesus Christ -– aiding in the restoration of Christendom.  ad Jesum per Mariam

College Bound

Rose and Dad made a final college visit before finalizing her plans for the coming years.  The trip was somewhat impromptu and made possible through generous benefactors and the most charitable hospitality of the college.

The pictures are sparse and the quality is poor due to the fact that Rose forgot her camera and Dad was operating a substandard camera phone – an utter disappointment to a blogger mom.

Mini Chartres

May 16, 2013 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Our Lady of Bethlehem, Pilgrimage, Pilgrimage to OLB 2013, Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Bethlehem 2 Comments

…expressing the condition of Christian life which is to be a long pilgrimage and a long walk to paradise…

OLB Pilgrimage - 2011

We are preparing to embark on our third Our Lady of Bethlehem Pilgrimage, our mini Chartres.

The Paris-Chartres Pilgrimage is a three-day walk from Notre-Dame de Paris to Notre-Dame de Chartres, approximately 60 miles. Pilgrims are organized into groups of 20-60 people, that are referred to as "chapters". The "walk" is through the streets of Paris, and then into the countryside. It can be muddy, rocky, and demanding, but the rewards of such a penitential exercise are eternal. Good sturdy shoes are a must. Each chapter is accompanied by at least one chaplain, who hears confession and gives spiritual direction to each pilgrim who avails himself of the priest’s presence. This pilgrimage originated in the 12th century, with interruptions for the various wars our European brethren seem to find themselves in from time to time.
Pilgrims will meet in front of Notre-Dame de Paris at 6 a.m. on 18th May 2013, and the journey of faith and foot begins. ~ Read here for more.

The Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Bethlehem is a three-day walk from San Juan Bautista Mission to Carmel Mission, approximately 45 miles.

Our theme for the OLB Pilgrimage 2013 will be the same as Chartres — EDUCATION, PATH TO HOLINESS.

After the defense of life (2011 theme) and family raised (2012 theme), the defense of education is the third non-negotiable points on which Pope Benedict XVI returns so frequently.
  • Friday, May 17, 2013 – The principles of education under the patronage of Saint John Bosco (Dragonfly’s 3rd Birthday)

  • Saturday, May 18, 2013 – Family, first of Education under the patronage of Saint John Baptist de la Salle (Sparkle’s 10th Birthday)

  • Sunday, May 19, 2013 – God teaches us through the Church under the patronage of St. Anne and St. Joachim (Church’s Birthday)

We make this pilgrimage for the following intentions:ur Lady of Bethlehem, is The Oldest Shrine of Our Lady on the West Coast of America.

  • To make Our Lady of Bethlehem known and Loved
  • In reparation for the offenses committed against the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
  • For Conversion of our own hearts, our families, Town, State, Country, the World
  • To pray for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart
  • Personal reparation and private intentions of family, friends and bloggers (whom have asked for prayers)  You may send me your prayer request via email (joyfilledfamily{at}gmail{dot}com) or in the comments.

The pilgrimage has always reared fruits for my family.  Both Dad and I trust that the graces from our OLB Pilgrimage 2012 led to my healing and the blessing of baby Gennaro Maximilian.  I had just suffered from two miscarriages for a total of six babies that have gone on to be with the Good Lord, we pray.

Needless to say, this year’s journey will be filled with thanksgiving for the many blessings that He has bestowed upon us, as unworthy as we are.  Also, it will most likely be the last pilgrimage we will take as complete family since Rose will venture off to college.  My heart runneth over with joy, thanksgiving, and a whole lot of other stuff that I best offer up.

Please keep us, and all the pilgrims all over the world who will be journeying this Pentecost season, in your prayers.  May we journey in a spirit of penance, fasting and giving alms along the way. May we do so joyously, in thanksgiving for blessings received, or in a spirit of supplication for blessings desired. May we be blessed by being in the presence of holy relics and by walking on ground hallowed by the Saints.  May it be done All for the Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, all through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, all in union with St. Joseph.

Our Lady of Bethlehem, pray for us now, pray for us in every need, and be Thou with us at the hour of our death. Amen.

Rogation Day ~ To Petition Earnestly

May 8, 2013 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 05 May, Procession, Rogation Day Leave a Comment

“Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you”. ~John 16:23

~~~
The Rogation Days consist of plaintive litanies to God and the saints chanted while the faithful proceed through town and country and the priest blesses their land and property. These processions*, which are penitential in character, end with Mass.
There are two sets of Rogation Days. The first, called the “Major” or “Greater” Litanies, is celebrated on April 25th. The second, called the “Minor” or “Lesser” Litanies, is celebrated on the three days immediately preceding Ascension Thursday.
~~~

Fr. B  Rogation Day 5.7.13

Why do we go around the fields in processions? To beg God to bless the fields with His fatherly hand, to give and preserve the fruits of the earth, and as He fills the animals with blessings, and gives them food at the proper time, so may He give to as also our necessary food.  ~Instruction Concerning the Procession of Rogation Days, Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine’s The Church’s Year

Rogation Procession 5.7.13

With what intentions should we take part in a procession?  With the intention of glorifying God, of thanking Him for all. His graces, and of obtaining aid and comfort from Him in all our corporal and spiritual needs; with the view of professing our faith openly before the whole world, and with the sincere resolution of always following Christ, the Crucified, in the path of penance and mortification. He who entertains other intentions and takes part, perhaps, for temporal advantages, or for sinful pleasures, or to avoid labor, sins against God and the Church who weeps over and condemns such abuses. ~Instruction Concerning the Procession of Rogation Days, Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine’s The Church’s Year

Rogation Day Mass

Favorably receive our prayers, O Lord, we beseech Thee; may we in our distress be consoled by Thy gifts and grow in love accordingly. Through our Lord . . .

*Processions are a figure of our pilgrimage on earth; we are strangers and wanderers here below, our journey reaches from this valley of tears to the heavenly Sion, the procession therefore returns into the house of God; our journey leads over the thorny ways of life, the procession therefore takes place in the open air, where the pilgrim is exposed to all kinds of weather; they are a powerful incentive to fervor in prayer for the faithful; when hundreds, even thousands of faithful praise God aloud, or cry to Him for help and mercy, must not even the coldest heart be roused to vivid, fervent devotion, since Christ has promised to be present even where two or three are assembled in His name? Processions are an open acknowledgment that praise, thanks and adoration are due to God alone, while they are a public profession of our faith in Christ, the Crucified; they are a solemn thanksgiving for being permitted to profess Christ, our Lord, before the whole world, as also for all the graces obtained through Him; they are a public testimonial of our faith in the one, holy, Catholic Church, whose members are united by the same bond of faith, and who form under their head, Christ, one family in God. Finally, they are a sign of the triumph of Christian faith over the darkness of heathenism. If processions are solemnized with such intentions, with order and dignity, with fervent devotion, in the light of faith, they are indeed a pleasing sight for angels and men. ~Instruction Concerning the Procession of Rogation Days, Rev. The meeting was rather informal and slightly deviated from the normal agenda due to preparation of Confirmation and the fact that I had my side-kick, six week old BabyG3.

The girls met in the gym for snack and social time.  Then we ventured outside for their gardening project, planting tomato plants in a pot.

The girls closed the meeting with social time and recreation.  They jumped rope until their hearts were content.

Postpartum Health & Fitness

babyg3 ready to swim

Bouncer at 8 weeks 12.5+lbs

I’m currently 8 weeks postpartum.  The homebirth was wonderful.  In fact it was my shortest labor yet, only 18 hours.  The problems didn’t surface until after the delivery.  According to a friend (mom of 7), I have officially joined the “sisterhood of mom’s of large babies.” Trust me, this is one sisterhood that you do not want to join.

I now suffer from pubic symphysis separation (PSS) due to the labor of BabyG3.

Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) is a condition that affects pregnant and/or postpartum women.  The symphysis pubis is a joint in the verimagey front part of the pelvic bone structure. There is cartilage that fills the gap in the bones. During pregnancy, hormones such as relaxin soften this cartilage allowing the pelvic bones to be more flexible for delivery. Some women, however, have too much play in the pelvis causing a large gap between the bones. This makes the symphysis pubis area extrimageemely sensitive to touch.  The pain is a result of separation of the symphysis pubis.

SPD causes pain in the front of the pelvis when touched. You may also feel pain in the lower abdomen, hips, inner thigh and groin areas. Marked increased pain with activities such as walking, climbing stairs, lifting your legs, or any other large movements involving the pelvis are key symptoms. You may even experience a clicking type noise with movement as well.

SPD is most often a a temporary situation and one that will resolve itself once the cartilage softening hormones decrease. Although there is no “cure” and it cannot be prevented in subsequent pregnancies, it does not mean that you will automatically experience SPD each pregnancy or birth.

In addition, my back felt as though it was broken in several places for the two weeks after delivery.  I was in P-A-I-N.  The pain was far greater than I’ve experienced with the previous five pregnancies, labors, and postpartum.  It was borderline disabling.  I was in so much pain that I actually took heed to the medical advice that was offered – bed rest, no excessive stair climbing, and wait the full 4-6 months before returning to active exercise.  NO excessive stair climbing, how is that even possible when I live in a two-story home and have little ones?  Active exercise for me at this time includes anything more than a short walk at a pace that puts me in a sweat.  The advice was given by a midwife who appreciates that I am open to life and will most likely have more babies.  She informed me that the relaxin, a key player to my aliment, will continue to be produced in my body for up to 4-6 months.  The ultimate goal is to allow my body to properly recover from a major life event, labor & delivery, so I do not have to live with long-term crippling pain and all it’s ramifications.

Taking things slow postpartum is not easy for me.  I “bounce back” rather quickly from labors and almost always have returned to my pre-pregnancy routine within days of delivery.  I believed that I was an exception and was eager and willing to forgo the necessary recovery that is recommended for new moms.  I strongly believe that many of my current aliments (in addition to those listed in this post)  stem from pushing myself too hard too soon postpartum.  I wamom walking with baby 7weekss warned but I’ve learned the lesson the hard way.

Praise God that I had improvements at around three weeks postpartum.  I’m sure the bed rest and resisting a desire to return to my normal routine as I have done with previous babies helped the healing process.

I began to walk at four weeks postpartum for a min of 15min. once a week.  This amount of exercise is not impressive unless you have experienced any related pubic symphysis issue.  It has been humbling for me, to say the least.  I logged one of my first postpartum “workouts” in my DailyMile and was reminded of where I left off a little over a year ago, a high-intensity workout.  It’s been another opportunity for me to ditch my all or nothing tendency.image

Recently I took a 1.78 mile walk.  I strapped on the baby (all 12.5lbs. of him) in a front carrier and headed to the clubhouse fbarefoot blistersor a swim team meeting.  The walk may have set me back.  I must admit that I made several mistakes during my walk.  My first mistake was leaving 20min too late to make the start of the meeting.  My second mistake was trying to speed-up to compensate for my late start.  I was not ready for an increase in pace.  It compromised my foot strike and caused blisters.  The third mistake was to put on shoes, thinking it would ease the blistering and help me speed up.  Instead, the shoes caused immediate back & IT pain.  As if that weren’t enough, my pain returned from my PSS.  I was somewhat of a wreck.

I’ll have to scale back a bit and get some quality recovery before heading out again.  Also, I will most likely not be carrying Baby G in the front carrier for long walks.

I’ll continue to dial in my eating and nourish my body with real food.

I’m in a new season and know all to well how fleeting it can be.  I pray for the Good Lord to give me the graces to follow Him.  He has led me to place blogging at an even lower priority than before but my mind is overflowing with memories that I want to record.  Instagram has served that purpose for me without having to stray from my duties.

I will strive to continue to live in the present moment and I may or may not blog about it.  May it be done ALL FOR HIM THROUGH MARY!

~~~
Here is my Instagram recap of my recent outing with my loves.
image
I decided to take the troops outdoors for some early morning sunshine.  They have been cooped up due to my homebody tendencies that jump into full gear when I have a new baby to smother enjoy.
Papi led the brigade and was certain to get everyone dressed despite my uncertainty when we would actually be able to venture out the door.
image
We got an early start since BabyG3 (poor guy is 6w5d and he still does not have a blog name) opted for a morning cat nap instead of his usual siesta.
image
Dragonfly took Uma by the leash and was dragged by her walked her for the first leg of our walk.
image
Proud mama with all her six ducklings.  Rose took the pic and BabyG3 was on my front in the carrier.
I’ve decided to include this picture in this post as an act of mortification, in hopes that I can truly accept {in my heart} the mantra that I play {in my head}…“Love yourself in all seasons and sizes. Give thanks for what the weight represents, a baby babies.  Do NOT let anything rob you of JOY!  Glorify Him always!!”
image
We walked in two worlds for much of the walk.  The wild life drew us in on one side of the road while we sought to escape the busyness of the world that hummed on the other side of the road.
Many of the wildflowers and weeds were over six feet tall.
image
I love how my littles seek adventure with whatever is placed before them.  Papi and Sweetie were bug watching.  Sparkles convinced them that she was in need of lady bugs for her garden.  Notice how Sparkles is no where in sight, she was afraid of the monstrous weeds.
image
We even stopped to let Uma swim.  Here she is thanking Rose for pulling her out when she got stuck in the ravine.
image
It felt so good to carry my lil’ man while soaking up the sun.  He loved the adventure and slept for the entire walk.
image
Our guide, Papi, led us to the levee.  He really does play the role of a guide, in a Croc Hunter kind of way.  Dad has taught him this fine skill.  It’s actually rather cute and all the girls enjoy his narration.
image
This flower was a lovely sight – life unexpected.
image
This was the end of the levee trek and mid-point of our walk.  All the kids enjoy running down this hill.  Dragonfly would love to run but he usually ends up rolling.
image
Two hours, one park visit, and two miles later, we made it home.  Dragonfly opted to ride his horsey for the last leg of the walk.
image
We were all tuckered out from the day’s outing. BabyG3 napped like a champ which meant that I was able to join him.  He has even been asleep for the past four hours, allowing me to post this instead of sleeping or nursing.  I feel out of my element.
Don’t be bothered by Lil’ Man’s (I think I found his blog name) pink blanket.  That’s the life of a brother with older sisters.
We plan to repeat this walk with a gradual increase in distance, at least three times a week, for a month, so that we are prepared for our annual pilgrimage.  Hopefully we can increase it to six miles and no horsey will be needed.  ALL FOR!
