The Guild

December 27, 2020 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Altar Guild, St. Stephen the First Martyr, Vocations Leave a Comment

To serve at the altar, as to sing in the choir, is next to the priesthood the highest privilege which a layman can enjoy. He represents the faithful and takes a most intimate part in the rich treasures of the Church’s liturgy and ceremonial. Those sacred ceremonies should be carried out with devotion, dignity and attention to detail. – Bernard Cardinal Griffin, Archbishop of Westminster.

Every year on the feast of St. Stephen (December 26) we honor our Altar Guild who are part of the Archconfraternity of St. Stephen.

This year we have our first son receiving a medal. It’s been a long-time coming but we trust that His time is perfect. Two of his brothers are also part of the Guild and will continue to work diligently to advance. We look forward to the day when all five will be serving together.

Guild’s logo and motto:
Cui Servire Regnare Est
Latin for “He who serves reigns” or “To serve is to reign”.
It is in imitation of Our Lord, Who did not come to be served, but to serve. Blessed is he who serves the Lord at His Holy Altar.
CROWN OF MARTYRDOM
One of the symbols attributed to the Martyrs. It is the crowning triumph of giving one’s life completely to Christ. Saint Stephen has the distinction of being the Protomartyr, or the first Martyr to shed his blood and die for Christ and His Kingdom.
TWIN-SET OF PALMS
The Palm of Martyrdom is another symbol attributed to the Martyrs. The palm symbolizes the triumph of the spirit over the flesh in the earthly battle for eternal salvation.
CHI-RHO
An ancient monogram for the name of Christ, which combines the Greek letters X and P. It was the symbol of victory that Christ revealed to Constantine: In hoc signo vinces!” “In this sign you shall conquer!”

The Archconfraternity of St Stephen is an International Organization of Altar Servers which was founded as the Society of Altar Servers at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in London in 1904 by Father Hamilton McDonald. In 1905, Pope Pius X gave his approbation to the canonical establishment of the Guild of St Stephen for altar servers at Westminster Cathedral and in 1906, the Sacred Congregation of Rites made the Guild an Archconfraternity prima primaria which enabled all the parish branches to be linked with it. The Guild spread, and in 1934, Pope Pius XI enabled all Guilds of Altar Servers throughout the British Commonwealth to be affiliated with the Archconfraternity at Westminster.

The objectives of the Guild

To encourage, positively and practically, the highest standards of serving at the Church’s liturgy and so contribute to the whole community’s participation in a more fruitful worship of God. To provide altar servers with a greater understanding of what they are doing so that they may serve with increasing reverence and prayerfulness and thereby be led to a deepening response to their vocation in life. To unite servers of different parishes and dioceses for their mutual support and encouragement

Ceremony of the Enrollment of Altar Guild Members (abbreviated)

After the Credo, the candidates will kneel, facing the altar, on the floor of the sanctuary. The priest, will stand facing them on the predella. Two servers will stand nearby, bearing the medals on a tray and the holy water.

V. Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini.
Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Qui fecit coelum et terram.
Who hath made heaven and earth

…Server: With the help of God, I do so promise.
Server(s): I offer myself to God Almighty, to Blessed Mary ever Virgin and to our Holy Patron, Saint Stephen, and I promise to do my best to serve reverently, intelligently and punctually, having the glory of God and my own eternal salvation as my object.

Blessing of Medals

Oremus.
Domine Deus virtutem, bonorum largitor, et benedictionum infusor, te humiliter deprecamur ut haec numismata bene  dicere et sancti  ficare digneris: suppliciter rogantes ut famuli tui qui eadem in notam Al- taris reverentur inserviendi volunt induere, tibi officium pie et fideliter exequantur, et tandem ad te, coram Altari sublimi in Caelis, tuae gloriae participes perveniant gaudentes. Qui vivis et regnas, etc.
R. Amen.

Let us pray.
O Lord, God of hosts, bestower of all good things and giver of every blessing, humbly we beseech Thee that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to bless  and to sanctify  these medals; do Thou grant we beseech Thee, that Thy servants who wish to wear them as a token of their devout service at Thine Altar, may faithfully and reverently fulfill their duties to Thee until at length being made partakers of Thy glory, they may joyfully come to Thee before Thy heavenly Altar. Who livest and reignest, etc.
R. Amen.

He sprinkles the medals with holy water.

The candidates will now advance in turn and kneel on the predella. While conferring the medal the priest will say:

Accipe signum aggregationis ad sodalitatem Sancti Stephani, ut eo jugiter interveniente, vitam sanctam ducere valeas. Amen.

Receive the token of your admission into the Guild of Saint Stephen that, ever aided by his intercession, you may lead a holy life. Amen.

After enrollment, the candidates will genuflect to the Blessed Sacrament and return by the sides of the Altar to their place on the lowest step or on the floor of the sanctuary

Oremus.
Amen.

Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst come not to be ministered unto but to minister, and Who standing at the right hand of the power of God, didst manifest to Saint Stephen the radiant light of Thy wonderful glory: Grant to Thy servants, we beseech Thee, that while faithfully serving Thy holy Altars, they may, with faith like to his, worship Thee hidden in Thine adorable Sacra- ment, and in their hearts and their minds, do Thou, O Lord, enkindle the love of Thy grace.
Who livest and reignest, etc.
Amen.

Making the Sign of the Cross over the newly admitted servers, the priest says:

Bene  dicat vos Deus, et custodiat corda vestra et intelligentias vestras, Pater, et Filius et Spiritus Sanctus. Amen.

May God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, bless you and safeguard you in heart and mind. Amen.

The priest then sprinkles the servers with holy water, after which, they return to their places (in choir.)

The Guild’s namesake
patron is St. Stephen

first to shed his blood for
Christ, and one of the Church’s first deacons

Guild Prayer

(To be recited daily)

O God, Who dost graciously accept the ministry of Thy servants and allow us to share in the service of Thine Altar: grant that, whilst in serving Thee we follow the example of our Patron, Saint Stephen, the first Martyr, we may, like him, come to see Thy Son standing at the right hand of Thy Majesty, and so enter into the Kingdom of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Prayer of Parents for Priestly & Religious Vocations

December 7, 2014 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Prayer for Families, Prayers, Vocations Leave a Comment

“A vocation comes from the heart of God, but goes through the heart of the mother.”  ~St. Pope Pius X

Here is the vocation prayer that our Pastor has encouraged our community to pray.  In addition, we offer our First Sunday Communion for this intention.  Be certain to read the story behind it’s origination. (see below)

Prayer of Parents for Priestly and Religious Vocations

(based on a prayer recited by the parents of Lu Monferrato, Italy)

O God, grant that at least one of our sons may become a priest
or religious brother, and one of our daughters a religious sister.
We ourselves want to live as good Christians, and to guide our
children always to do what is right, so that we may receive the
grace, O God, to be allowed to give Thee a holy priest, brother, or
sister! Amen.

(Conclude with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be)

Prayer for Priestly and Religious Vocations

Priest: Let us pray for priestly and religious vocations.
All: O God, we earnestly beseech Thee to bless the Church with many priests, brothers, and sisters, who will love Thee with their whole hearts, be faithful to their vocations, and gladly spend their entire lives to teach Thy truths, serve Thy Church, and to make Thee known and loved.
Priest: Bless our families, bless our children.
All: Choose from our homes those who are needed for Thy work.
Priest: O Mary, Queen of priestly and religious vocations:
All: Pray for us. Pray for our priests, seminarians and religious.  Obtain for us the grace of many more. Amen.

(Please offer your reception of Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month for vocations)

The Example of Lu Monferrato

The little village of Lu, northern Italy, with only a few thousand inhabitants, is in a rural area 90 kilometers east of Turin. It would still be unknown to this day if, in the year 1881, the family mothers of Lu had not made a decision that had “serious consequences”.

The deepest desire of many of these mothers was for one of their sons to become a priest or for a daughter to place her life completely in God’s service. Under the direction of their parish priest, Msgr. Alessandro Canora, they gathered every Tuesday for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, asking the Lord for vocations. They received Holy Communion on the first Sunday of every month with the same intention. After Mass, all the mothers prayed a particular prayer together imploring for vocations to the priesthood.

Through the trusting prayer of these mothers and the openness of the other parents, an atmosphere of deep joy and Christian piety developed in the families, making it much easier for the children to recognize their vocations.

Did the Lord not say,“Many are called, but few are chosen” (Mt 22:14)? In other words, many are called, but only a few respond to that call. No one expected that God would hear the prayers of these mothers in such an astounding way.

From the tiny village of Lu came 323 vocations!: 152 priests (diocesan and religious), and 171 nuns belonging to 41 different congregations.

Every ten years, the priests and sisters born in Lu come together from all around the world. Fr. Mario Meda, the long-serving parish priest of Lu, explained that this reunion is a true celebration, a feast of thanksgiving to God who has done such great things for Lu.

The prayer that the Mothers of Lu prayed was short, simple, and deep:

O God, grant that one of my sons may become a priest!
I myself want to live as a good Christian
and want to guide my children always to do what is right,
so that I may receive the grace, O God, to be allowed to give you a holy priest! Amen.

Mothers of Lu

This picture is indeed unique in the annals of the Catholic Church. From 1 to 4 September 1946, the majority of the 323 priests and religious met in their village of Lu for a reunion which attracted world-wide attention.

You are the Life

May 26, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Vocations

JOYfilledfamily and MC JOYWe are in need of constant reminders of what is needed to reach our home.  Mostly recently, we were blessed with two wonderful opportunities for such reminders.   The first was a visit to hear Fr.Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C.  The second was to celebrate the Missionaries of Charity First Profession of Vows.

These events are also ways which dad I believe are called upon us to better lead our gifts from God, our children.  We pray that both events will grow fruits within our family and provide us with grace to do His will, always.

Without You I can do nothing. ~ Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Please keep Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk & Sr. Maria Dolores and the entire MC family in your prayers

"MOTHER TERESA’S LIFE AND MISSION"

Reflections by one of her priests and the
Postulator of her Cause for Canonization,
Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C.

fr brianRose and I traveled on Tuesday to hear Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C.  He is the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers and Postulator of Bl. Mother Teresa’s Cause for Canonization.  He also edited Come Be My Light.

Father shared his call to his vocation and his close encounters with Bl. Mother Teresa.  He knew Mother Teresa for twenty years.

Father cited the two special gifts that mother received as a child, in addition to being surrounded by a good family and parish.

  1. Mother recalled that since she was a child, the heart of Jesus has been her first love.
  2. From the time she received her First Communion at the young age of 5 1/2, she had a love for souls.

He spoke of her simple ways, similar to that of her namesake, St. Therese of Lisieux.  Father spoke of Mother’s close union with God and the darkness that she experienced.  She accepted all that she encountered, for the love of Christ.

Father went into more detail about Mother Teresa’s pure vision of faith.  She made a private vow five years after her final profession in 1942.  She professed this vow to be binding under mortal sin.

Not to refuse Him anything.  Give God everything I Have.  ~ Mother Teresa

She sasiated His thirst.

Here are some more quotes of Mother Teresa that Fr. Brian shared.

Love is not talking.  Love is living.  I can talk about love all day and not have loved once.  ~ Mother Teresa

Something beautiful for God.  ~ Mother Teresa

Her call was to…Love Jesus as He has never been loved before.  ~ Mother Teresa

Works  of love are works of peace.  ~  Mother Teresa

This was all wonderful food for our soul.  Rose and I were grateful for the time together and the wonderful example of humility that was shared with us.  Click here to listen to and read more mediations by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C.

(prayer dedication in my family’s copy of Come Be My Light)

For JOYfilledfamily,

May Mother Teresa be a light

of faith + love + help you be a

light to each other + to all you

meet + serve.

God bless you,

Fr. Brian, M.C.

FIRST PROFESSION OF VOWS

MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY

st paul's catholic church joy

The entire family traveled over an hour to celebrate an event that only takes place in two places in the world.  It is a great blessing to be near to one of those locations.  This was the third time that we have been able to witness the MC profession.  The children are always touched by the joy that radiates from the sisters.  Dad and I were especially moved by the families of the sisters.  We felt their love and support for their loved ones as they confirmed God’s will.

You are the way to the Father,

You are the love with which I want to love

You are the joy that I want to share

You are the Peace that I want to sow

Jesus, You’re everything to me!

Without You, I can do nothing.

You’re in the Poor whom I want to serve

Yours is the thirst that I want to satiate

You are the One whom my heart loves!

Nothing can separate me from Your Love

You are the truth that I want to tell

You are my Spouse now and for life

Jesus, You’re Everything to me!

Without, I can do nothing.

Jesus gave Mary as a Mother to me

under Your Cross, Her love I will imitate

I want to echo Her fiat

Close to Our Lady, I’ll quench Your Thirst

A Victim of Love for You I will be

Jesus You’re everything to me!

Without you I can do nothing.

Mother Teresa ~ Ora pro nobis.

Jesus, you made Blessed Teresa an inspiring example of firm faith amtstairscroppednd burning charity, an extraordinary witness to the way of spiritual childhood, and a great and esteemed teacher of the value and dignity of every human life. Grant that she may be venerated and imitated as one of the Church’s canonized saints.
Hear the requests of all those who seek her intercession, especially the petition I now implore… (mention here the favour you wish to pray for).

May we follow her example in heeding Your cry of thirst from the Cross and joyfully loving You in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor, especially those most unloved and unwanted.

We ask this in Your name and through the intercession of Mary, Your Mother and the Mother of us all.
Amen.

Vocations

May 4, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Vocations

image We just recently heard of Mater Ecclesiae Fund for Vocations and wanted to share.

The Mater Ecclesiae Fund for Vocations (MEFV) helps men and women who have generously responded to God’s call to religious life but are prevented from beginning that life of sacrifice by their student loans. The MEFV offers grants that pay the minimum monthly payments of a sister’s or brother’s student loans.

It is our mission to eliminate the obstacle an aspirant’s student loans present to answering his vocation.
