The Holy Face of Jesus

February 16, 2021 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Holy Face of Jesus, Lent, Mardis Gras, Shrove Tuesday Leave a Comment

Devotion to the Holy Face of Christ is of ancient origin, reaching back to the fourth century and before. The feast of the Holy Face of Jesus was established throughout the universal Church in 1958 by Pope Pius XII to be observed on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday.

It is an opportunity to make reparation for the outrages that the Holy Face of Jesus received during His Passion, and which He continues to receive.

May we not get carried away with a carnival mentality on this last day before Lent. But further examine ourselves and go to confession to remove any sins that would hinder us from having a holy and fruitful Lent.

“Devotion to the Holy Face was/is to make reparation for the blasphemies and outrages of the ‘revolutionaries’ of that (our) time, the blasphemies of atheists, freethinkers and Masons, and for blasphemy and the profanation of Sundays by Catholics.

Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre (1816-1848) wrote:

“Then He unfolded His Heart to me, concentrating therein the powers of my soul, and addressed me thus: ‘My Name is everywhere blasphemed; even little children blaspheme it.’  And He made me understand how that dreadful sin pierced and wounded His Heart more than all other crimes.

“By blasphemy, the sinner outrages Him to His Face, attacks Him openly, and pronounces upon himself his own judgment and condemnation. Blasphemy is a poisoned arrow, wounding His Divine Heart continually. He told me that He would give me a “Golden Arrow” with which to wound Him delightfully and heal the poisonous wounds caused by sin.”

Our Lord then dictated to Sr. Mary the following Golden Arrow prayer, assuring her that every time she said it, she would lovingly wound His Heart.

The Golden Arrow Prayer

May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored, and glorified in Heaven, on earth and in Hell, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.”

Our Lord told Sr. Mary on March 16, 1844: “Oh if you only knew what great merit you acquire by saying even once, ‘Admirable is the Name of God!’ in the spirit of reparation for blasphemy.”

Prayer of St. Therese of Lisieux to the Holy Face of Jesus

O Jesus, Who in Thy bitter Passion didst become “the most abject of men, a man of sorrows,” I venerate Thy Sacred Face whereon there once did shine the beauty and sweetness of the Godhead; but now it has become for me as if it were the face of a leper! Nevertheless, under those disfigured features, I recognize Thy infinite Love and I am consumed with with the desire to love Thee and make Thee loved by all men. The tears which well abundantly in Thy sacred eyes appear to me as so many precious pearls that I love to gather up, in order to purchase the souls of poor sinners by means of their infinite value. O Jesus, Whose adorable Face ravishes my heart, I implore Thee to fix deep within me Thy Divine Image and to set me on fire with Thy Love, that I may be found worthy to come to the contemplation of Thy glorious Face in Heaven. Amen.

The Holy Face feast was established throughout the universal Church in 1958 by Pope Pius XII to be observed on the Tuesday (historically known as Shrove Tuesday) before Ash Wednesday. It is a beautiful and precious opportunity to make reparation for the outrages that the Holy Face of Jesus received during His Passion, and which He continues to receive daily in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

I firmly wish that My Face reflecting the intimate pains of My Soul, the suffering and love of My Heart, be more honored! Whoever gazes upon Me already consoles Me…

Devotion to the Holy Face of Christ is of ancient origin, reaching back to the fourth century and before. From the 12th century on, the devotion began to revolve around the Veil of Veronica, held to be the cloth Veronica gave to Our Lord to wipe His face during the carrying of the Cross.  Popularity of the devotion grew enormously with St. Therese of the Child Jesus making known her devotion to the Holy Face, with an Archconfraternity of the Holy Face formed in Tours, France, in 1884.  A pious nun, Sr. Pierina, was deeply devoted to the Holy Face as a way to console Our Lord, to make reparation for the conversion of sinners, and make reparation for the negligence and contempt shown for the Blessed Sacrament.  She was miraculously able to obtain permission to cast a medal of the Holy Face, and its use was widespread amongst Italian soldiers in WWII.

St. Therese had a special devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, and always had its picture near her.

ACT OF CONSECRATION

Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in Thee, we love Thee. Thou art the Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thou art the Lord and Absolute ruler of all creation. We acknowledge Thee, therefor-e, as Uni- versal Sovereign of all creatures. Thou art the Lord and Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this Thy domin- ion, consecrate ourselves to Thee now and forever. Loving Jesus, we place our family under the protection of Thy Holy Face, and of Thy Virgin Mother, Mary Most Sorrowful. We promise to be faithful to Thee for the rest of our lives and to observe with fi- delity Thy holy Commandments. We will never deny before men Thee and Thy Divine rights over us and all mankind. Grant us the grace to never sin again; nevertheless, should we fail, O Divine Savior, have mercy on us and restore us to Thy grace. Radiate Thy Divine Countenance upon us and bless us now and forever. Embrace us at the hour of death in Thy kingdom for all eternity, through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, of all Thy Saints who behold Thee in Heaven, and the just who glorify Thee on earth. O Jesus, be mindful of us forever and never forsake us; protect our family. O Mother of Sorrows, by the eternal glory which Thou enjoyest in Heav- en, through the merits of Thy bitter anguish in the Sacred Passion of Thy Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for us the grace that the Precious Blood shed by Jesus for the re- demption of our souls, be not shed for us in vain. We love thee, O Mary. Embrace us and bless us, O Mother. Protect us in life and in death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

According to the care you take in making Reparation to My Face, disfigured by blasphemies, so will I care for yours, which has been disfigured by sin. I will reprint on it My Image and render it as beautiful as it was on leaving the baptismal font.” (November 3, 1845) –Promises of Our Lord to Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre

First Week of Lent – 2013

Shrove Tuesday – February 12, 2013

Seven Holy Servite Founders, Confessors, III Class

I had planned for a quite in-home celebration for Shrovetide since I was not fit to partake in our normal tradition of visiting the elderly.  I was plum out of energy from RMGS bake sale & meeting, 39 weeks pregnant, and a bit apprehensive to expose myself (or family) to any illnesses.  I was willing to offer it up and thought the rest of the family was on the same page.

Papi has a lovely internal liturgical radar and recalled this time of year – festivities before the desert.  He specifically remembered that we usually go bowling around this time.  He set the plans into action and we had an impromptu Shrovetide celebration.

It has to be experienced to be fully believed, but there is a great blessing on such a Carnival time, shared in a family. To have spent a good Carnival will finally prove to the greater honor and glory of God, in enabling us to spend a good Lent!

Ash Wednesday – February 13, 2013

Ash Wednesday, I Class

We attended a local parish for 7am Mass and distribution of Ashes.

The rest of the day was a bit somber.  School was done in the newest learning room, my bedroom.  The littles organized all of their Lenten supplements and enjoyed some quite learning at the foot of my bed.

Dinner was as penitential as I could get, curried cream of broccoli soup.  I was actually craving it but I knew it wouldn’t be a favorite for some of the kids since they prefer our traditional cream of broccoli and cheese soup.

Now it is only right that, before we arrive at that glory of impassibility and immortality which began in Christ, and which was acquired for us through Christ, we should be shaped after the pattern of Christ s sufferings. It is then only right that Christ s liability to suffer should remain in us too for a time, as a means of our coming to the impassibility of glory in the way He himself came to it. ~ Meditations for Lent from St. Thomas Aquinas

St. Valentine’s Day – February 14, 2013

St. Valentine, Bishop & Martyr, III Class

Again, my plan was to keep our Lenten program since the day was only a 3rd class feast.  Each of the kids were able to have one treat in the morning in honor of St. Valentine.  Everything continued to go according to plan until the girls left for chorister lessons.

The boys opted for a snack, strawberries.  The strawberry snack soon turned into chocolate dipped strawberries.

I was exhausted (it doesn’t take much these days).  Plans for dinner were not looking good.  I got the boys ready to venture out of the house for a date night with dad.  We settled on In-N-Out.

We all enjoyed our special treat.  It was nice to dine with just the boys.  Papi had his usual, plain hamburger with fries.  Dragonfly’s appetite was slightly less than a grown man.  He had one and half servings of fries with pepper and salt.

We returned home to find that Nana (broke into the house) left a special treat for everyone.

We all had a night of relaxation.  The boys got ready for bed early and we prayed our rosary.  Then dad’s nesting bug kicked in, that’s what happens when mom lacks the energy to have her nesting kick in – GOD IS GOOD!

Dad rallied the troops.  The two boys vacuumed the stairs with the shop vac while dad deep cleaned my room.  Then the boys took turns vacuuming my room and hall way.  It was a wonderful St. Valentine treat for me.

Friday after As Wednesday – February 15, 2013

Friday after Ash Wednesday, III Class

The morning was spent prepping for my in-home midwife appointment.

The kids worked on their Stations of the Cross projects.

We ate our lunch in the park since the weather was absolutely beautiful and I needed the exercise.

We ended the rather quite day with Stations of the Cross in my birthing suite.  We used our DVD, Way of the Cross for Children and our Stations of the Cross Candles.

The times self-indicated for fasting are then those in which men are especially bound to free themselves from sin and to raise their minds to God in devotion. ~ Meditations for Lent from St. Thomas Aquinas

Saturday after As Wednesday – February 16, 2013

Saturday after Ash Wednesday, III Class

The day was spent at home with no outside commitments.  Dad coordinated a Lenten clean-up around the house and allowed me to hibernate.  I seem to be coveting any quite time that I’m presented with, hoping that I’ll have enough reserve once Baby G arrives.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. ~ John 12:24

Shrovetide

My family is gearing up for the official start of Lent.  We spent Monday (CLEAN MONDAY) doing our pre-Lenten cleaning.  Shrove Tuesday will take us outside of the home for majority of the day.  We will visit a nursing home to bring joy to the sick and elderly.

A dear friend helped us start this tradition.  Several years ago, Tiffany coordinated a group of families to visit the elderly bearing Mardi Gras jewels and wearing silly hats, all to share our joy.  We adopted the simple act of almsgiving and now make a regular visit to the elderly on Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras.  It is a lovely way to enter the Lenten season.

We’ll take the party pack to our parish.  The kids have requested their traditional Shrove Tuesday lunch, pizza.  Dad and I will accommodate for this one last hooray.  We’ll take some time for recreation and then offer our services to the parish.  Dad will complete his weekly yard work, I will help the littles clean the pews, and Rose is planning to check in with Father for her assignment.  God willing, I will be able to sneak away for some much needed spiritual direction.  We hope to wrap up our day out with a visit to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.  There, we will bring our Lenten intentions and complete our first day of our Consecration renewal – AD JESUM PER MARIAM.

Many have been invited to join us but I’m not sure who will show.  It really doesn’t matter, this tradition was made for us to bring JOY to others as a family.  Bringing others along was the icing on the cake – so no icing this year but we still got a cake.  AMEN!

We will return home for more festivities.  We’ll recap on our Lenten program and say a family rosary.  Next, we’ll watch a movie since Dad has declared it movie night.  We’ll probably have pancakes for dinner.  Then we will pack up the TV and DVD/VCR player to store in the garage.  We will enjoy our last comforts before we begin our time in the desert, in darkness and silence — removed from the world (in the best way we can).

Oh, Christian soul make your body a living and dying victim; mortify you passions, your senses, and your desires; mortify yourself at all times, and in all places; mortify yourself with zeal, mortify yourself with discretion. ~Considerations and devout meditations for every day during … Lent, by a member of the Society of Jesus

Shh! Don’t tell the kids…

Dad and I have a secret from Shrove Tuesday.  We had an after hours treat.

I bought these to make for Rose’s party.

3.8 coffee mix

We decided to try them since they were on clearance at Costco.  They’re delicious.

I’m not a coffee drinker but I do enjoy an occasional caramel frappuccino.  Dad loves anything with sugar and caffeine.

3.8 mom and dad's shrove tue treat(I’m posting this pic as a Lenten exercise in humility.)

We made ourselves a farewell drink to bring in my favorite season of the year, the Lenten season.  It was our carnival.

Carnival is from the Latin Carnevale or “farewell to meat”, and it is a time of joyful feasting and fun. The practice of celebrating carnival probably began in ancient times when the Sunday a week before the beginning of Lent was called Dominica Carnevala, or “farewell to meat Sunday” — referring to the Lenten fast from meat and animal products…~ Women for Faith & Family, The Observance of Lent – Part I

The cappuccino mixes now sit on the counter to tempt dad.  As for me, I got my fix.  I’ll see how long it lasts.

I said good-bye to all drinks that are not clear and tasteless – I’m only drinking water.  I have to get creative with fasting since I’m nursing and have a dispensation from adhering to the laws of fasting.

ALL FOR!
