St. Martin de Porres

“Compassion is preferable to cleanliness. Reflect that with a little soap I can easily clean my bed covers, but even with a torrent of tears I would never wash from my soul the stain that my harshness toward the unfortunate would create.”

~ St. Martin de Porres

St. Martin de Porres adopted us in 2015.  He proved to be a trusty intercessor, showing up in many unexpected places throughout the year.  Our devotion to St. Martin de Porres grew that year and continues to permeate our spirutial journey.  We are delighted to share a bit about this humble and charitable saint on his feastday, November 3.

The example of Martin’s life is ample evidence that we can strive for holiness and salvation as Christ Jesus has shown us: first, by loving God “with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; and second, by loving your neighbor as yourself.” When Martin had comartin-de-porresme to realize that Christ Jesus “suffered for us and that he carried our sins on his body to the cross, he would meditate with remarkable ardor and affection about Christ on the cross. He had an exceptional love for the great sacrament of the Eucharist and often spent long hours in prayer before the blessed sacrament. His desire was to receive the sacrament in Communion as often as he could. Saint Martin, always obedient and inspired by his divine teacher, dealt with his brothers and with that profound love which comes from pure faith and humility of spirit. He loved men and because he honestly looked on them as God’s children and as his own brothers and sisters. Suchwas his humility that he loved them even more than himself, and considered them to be better and more righteous than he was. He did not blame others for their shortcomings. Certain that he deserved more severe punishment forhis sins than others did, he would overlook their worst offenses. He was tireless in his efforts to reform the criminal, and he would sit up with the sick to bring them comfort. For the poor he would provide food, clothing and medicine. He did all he could to care for poor farmhands, blacks, and mulattoes who were looked down upon as slaves, the dregs of society in their time. Common people responded by calling him, “Martin the charitable.” He excused the faults of others. He forgave the bitterest injuries, convinced that he deserved much severer punishments on account of his own sins. He tried with all his might to redeem the guilty; lovingly he comforted the sick; he provided food, clothing and medicine for the poor; he helped, as best he could, farm laborers and Negroes, as well as mulattoes, who were looked upon at that time as akin to slaves: thus he deserved to be called by the name the people gave him: ‘Martin of Charity.’ It is remarkable how even today his influence can still move us toward the things of heaven. Sad to say, not all of us understand these spiritual values as well as we should, not do we give them a proper place in our lives. Many of us, in fact, strongly attracted by sin, may look upon these values as of little moment, even something of a nuisance, or we ignore them altogether. It is deeply rewarding for men striving for salvation to follow in Christ’s footsteps and to obey God’s commandments. If only everyone could learn this lesson from the example that Martin gave us. ~ from a homily by Blessed Pope John XXIII given at the canonization of Saint Martin de Porres

Edith Stein motherliness

Ordinary Time: August 9th

Optional Memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, virgin and martyr

This year St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross chose me, she is my patron saint of 2016. There hasn’t been a day that has gone by without me seeking her intercession.  Below is an image and free printable of an excerpt from a prayer of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.  I’ve also included links/resources to learn more about this holy martyr & philosopher of truth.

Prayers of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
O Prince of Peace, to all who receive You, You bright light and peace.  Help me to live in daily contact with You, listening to the words You have spoken and obeying them.  O Divine Child, I place my hands in Yours; I shall follow You.  Oh, let Your divine life flow into me.
I will go unto the altar of God.  It is not myself and my tiny little affairs that matter here, but the great sacrifice of atonement.  I surrender myself entirely to Your divine will, O Lord.  Make my heart grow greater and wider, out of itself into the Divine Life.
O my God, fill my soul with holy joy, courage and strength to serve You.  Enkindle Your love in me and then walk with me along the next stretch of road before me.  I do not see very far ahead, but when I have arrived where the horizon now closes down, a new prospect will open before me and I shall met with peace.
How wondrous are the marvels of your love, We are amazed, we stammer and grow dumb, for word and spirit fail us.

Holy Family of Nazareth

January 10, 2016 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 01 January, 01 January Saints, Holy Family, Patron Saint, Prayer, Prayer for Families, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

The Holy Family is our model.  We have consecrated our family to the Holy Family and continue to seek their intercession.  This is our family prayer….

Heavenly Father, you have given us the Holy Family - First Suday after Epiphanymodel of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth.  Help us, O Loving Father,to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace and joy reign.

May it be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, revived with joy.  Help us to stay together in joy and sorrow in family prayer.

Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our families, especially in their distressing disguise.

May the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus make our hearts humble like his and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way.

May we love one another as God loves each one of us, more and more each day, and forgive each other’s faults as you forgive our sins.

Help us, O Loving Father, to take whatever you give and give whatever you take with a big smile.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and protect us.

Amen.

2014 Patron Saint

December 28, 2013 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: 01 January, New Year, Patron Saint, St. Leo the Great 1 Comment

On the occasion of the New Year 1935 Saint Maria Faustina made this entry in her spiritual Diary:  "Jesus likes to intervene in the smallest details of our life. And He often fulfills secret wishes of mine that I sometimes hide from Him, although I know that from Him nothing can be hidden. There is a custom among us of drawing by lot on New Year’s Day, special patrons for ourselves for the whole year…”  ~ Saint Maria Faustina

We are discerning a major family opportunity and felt it only fitting to enlist the intercession of a new patron saint.  We opted to select one saint for the family this year.

Our 2014 Patron Saint is…St. Leo the Great.

We used the Saint’s Name Generator.

"Short and fleeting are the joys of this world’s pleasures which endeavors to turn aside from the path of life those who are called to eternity. The faithful and religious spirit, therefore, must desire the things which are heavenly, and being eager for the Divine promises, lift itself to the love of the incorruptible Good and the hope of the true Light." ~ St. Leo the Great
