A New Start

March 15, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent

There are many things that I give thanks for at this time.  My number one item of thanks is Laetare Sunday, Rejoice, O Jerusalem.

…special signs of joy permitted on this day, intended to encourage the faithful in their course through the season of penance….

I’m filled with JOY that we are given an opportunity for a “new start” to our Lenten journey.  I’m graciously taking this wonderful opportunity to start anew, to recommit myself to the promptings that God has placed on my heart, and to prayerfully re-enter this time of penance.

May the JOY and Peace of Christ fill us all during the remainder of this Lenten Season.

Stations of the Cross Candles

March 4, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Stations of the Cross 5 Comments

We Rose just made our Stations of the Cross candle set.  She made three sets to be exact.  We plan to keep one set and give two sets away to Godparents on First Friday.

I initially saw this idea on Just Another Day In Paradise.  We printed the same traditional black & white images that were used in her tutorial.

I decided to follow Lisa Sweet’s prompting and only create 12 candles since the 12th station is when Jesus dies on the cross.
….we only have 12 candles, because Jesus dies in the 12th station and the Light goes out of the world. Dad does the last 2 stations with a flashlight and the rest of us in the dark. ~ Lisa Sweet comment on Catholic Icing

I found the votive candles in a set of 12 at Wal-Mart for $6.

Rose used Mod Podge to adhere the printed stations to the glass votive.  She applied a couple of layers over the image to properly seal it to the votive candle.

We are all looking forward to using these candles on First Friday for Stations of the Cross in our home.

Lenten Cleaning Update #1

March 2, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Organization

We are hanging in there. We’re not completely on schedule but making progress, nonetheless. All the kids have managed to become sick. Papi started the trend. He had to make and emergency room visit due to bronchitis. Also, my energy is slipping. What can I say, I’m seven months and ready to put myself on bed rest. I’m only kidding. I’m actually very thankful that this pregnancy has been trouble free thus far.

We worked on the office and kitchen last week. I really do not know what I would do without Rose. She has been my primary help. My husband usually is my main help but his current schedule hardly allows for sleep so he gets reprieve.

I tend to take the minimalist approach when cleaning and organizing. This is sometimes a fight with 4 kids always making an argument why we need multiple items.

I had collected some of Papi’s worn books to toss. I had the books in a bag and was walking down the hall to the garage when Papi saw me. He took one look at the bag and said, “Oh mom, my book! Thank you.” He proceeded to help himself into my bag for his book.

The kitchen cabinets were re-organized, cleaned and items were purged.  I only took pictures of a couple of cabinets/drawers.

The kitchen pantry had an overall. I’m embarrassed to share pictures but I’ve decided to accept this opportunity as a practice of humility. : )

I still need to finalize my kitchen and tackle my “everything” drawer, craft drawer and desk drawers. Meanwhile my kitchen counter tops are still not entirely clean. I guess it’s the storm before the calm.

The office turned into the catch-all room over the past 4 months.  It was in desperate need of organizing. We had impromptu over-night company and we made this room into a make-shift guest room. That was back in November. The bed had to go back to Papi’s room. The toys were removed for possible donation. They are waiting their fate in the garage.  Meanwhile……..

…Rose has reclaimed her work space. This is actually her school room that she so graciously shares with us for crafts and misc. projects. I would love to better organize this space but we took a vow not to spend money this year for this Lenten task.

The plan is to print the “after” pictures and post in each room (near the door/light) so the girls we all have a reminder of what the room is to look like prior to leaving the room.

We have collected 19 – 30 gallon trash bags and 9 – 30 gallon give-away bags. This does not include our 2 boxes of canned food items. Sparkles will be using these items for her Little Flowers Generosity project. Our Little Flowers group will be donating the canned food items to the Catholic Charities Food Bank.

I’m continuing to cover this Lenten task in prayer!  Much is needed for our perseverance and peace.

SIMPLE Lent Activities

February 27, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, Lent

Lenten Calendar
I found my inspiration from Jessica and have modified this year’s calendar.
Lenten Cleaning
We attempt to prepare our physical house as well as spiritual house in preparation for the Resurrection of Jesus.
Here is our cleaning outline for the year and pictures from our Lenten cleaning in 2009.
Sacrifice Beans
Each child is given a jar and she is responsible for depositing a bean for her act of kindness or sacrifice. We generally do not have the children remove beans but this year we have decided to have the children remove beans from their jar for not being “Christ-like.” We wanted to try it this way this year since Sparkles is preparing for her First Communion.
Resurrection Eggs
**UPDATE**
Resurrection Eggs Tutorial
Rose made her first set of Resurrection Eggs with Sparkles’ Godmother years ago.  We have incorporated them every year since.  I’m not sure where she found her material but I have continued to use her narration and eggs contents.   I hope to have a tutorial soon since I’m planning this as the craft for my next Little Flowers meeting.
Almsgiving
We forgo treats, daily pleasures and wants to donate to our local Life Center & Catholic Bishop’s Maternity Home.  We attend Mass on Holy Thursday. The girls present their Lenten collection. Rose presents the family’s flower offering for the Altar of Repose. It is a long evening for the children. Mass starts at 6pm and ends at 9:30.  Mass is followed by Adoration.  (We’ve yet to last through Adoration since we drive 1 hr each way to Mass).
Fasting
We observe Good Friday in solace. This hasn’t always been the case but we finally answered God’s prompting placed on our hearts. There are no activities (sports, entertainment, and the like) – only Mass, family prayer, viewing of the Passion and our Good Friday meal.
For years we have eaten tomato soup with a grilled cheese (for kids). The kids We have grown to enjoy this soup very much. So much so, that I’m rethinking its place as a Lenten meal. However, Sweetie does call it Jesus’ blood.

Lenten Cleaning Schedule

February 21, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Organization 5 Comments

We will be attempting to follow a cleaning schedule as closely as possible.  This is our outline.

We are on schedule as of today thanks to an emergency visit from the electrician.
