Stations of the Cross for the Home

March 23, 2017 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Stations of the Cross 1 Comment

“ They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones.”

This is a tradition that we started 7 years ago and have continued it at the prompting of my children.   We were inspired by  Just Another Day In Paradise.

Is the practice of this devotion of the Way of the Cross of great value?
Next to the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and holy Communion, there is certainly no devotion which represents better to us the sufferings and death of Christ than the Way of the Cross. St. Albertus Magnus says: “A simple remembrance of Christ’s sufferings is worth more than fasting on bread and water every Friday for a year, and scourging one’s self unto blood.” St. Bernard gives us the reason of this, when he says: “Who can consider the sufferings of Christ and be so void of religion as to remain untouched; so proud that he will not humble himself; so vindictive that he will not forgive; so fond of pleasure that he will not abstain from it; so hard-hearted that he will not repent of his sins?” And St. Augustine says: “What pride, what avarice, what anger can be cured otherwise than by the humility, the poverty, the patience of the Son of God? All these virtues are found in carefully meditating on that way of pain which our Saviour went, and along which we should follow Him.” On this account several of the Popes, among others Clement XII. and Benedict XIV., have granted many indulgences to the performance of this devotion; indulgences which may be applied to the suffering souls in purgatory.  ~Fr. Leonard Goffine, The Church’s Year

Our first set was made by Rose when she was 14.  Our newest set was made by Sparkles at 13 years old.

Stabat Mater

At the cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last:
Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Lo! the piercing sword had passed!

O how sad, and sore distressed,
Now was she, that Mother Blessed
Of the Sole-begotten One;
Woe-begone, with heart’s prostration,
Mother meek, the bitter Passion
Saw she of her glorious son

Who could mark, from tears refraining,
Christ’s dear Mother uncomplaining,
In so great a sorrow bowed?
Who, unmoved, behold her languish
Underneath His Cross of anguish,
‘Mid the fierce, unpitying crowd?

For His people’s sins rejected,
She her Jesus, unprotected,
Saw with thorns, with scourges rent;
Saw her Son from judgment taken,
Her beloved in death forsaken,
Till His Spirit forth He sent.

Fount of love and holy sorrow,
Mother! may my spirit borrow
Somewhat of thy woe profound;
Unto Christ, with pure emotion,
Raise my contrite heart’s devotion,
Love to read in every Wound.

Those five Wounds on Jesus smitten,
Mother! in my heart be written,
Deep as in thine won they be:
Thou, my Savior’s cross who bearest,
Thou, thy Son’s rebuke who sharest,
Let me share them both with thee!

In the Passion of my Maker
Be my sinful soul partaker,
Weep till death, and weep with thee;
Mine with thee be that sad station,
There to watch the great Salvation
Wrought upon the atoning Tree.

Virgin thou of virgins fairest,
May the bitter woe thou sharest
Make on me impression deep:
Thus Christ’s dying may I carry,
With Him in His Passion tarry,
And His wounds in memory keep.

May His Wounds transfix me wholly,
May His Cross and Life Blood holy
Ebriate my heart and mind;
Thus inflamed with pure affection,
In the Virgin’s Son protection
May I at the judgment find.

When in death my limbs are failing,
Let Thy Mother’s prayer prevailing
Lift me, Jesus! to Thy throne;
To my parting soul be given
Entrance through the gate of Heaven,
There confess me for Thine own.
Amen.

Stations of the Cross Candles

March 4, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Lent, Stations of the Cross 5 Comments

We Rose just made our Stations of the Cross candle set.  She made three sets to be exact.  We plan to keep one set and give two sets away to Godparents on First Friday.

I initially saw this idea on Just Another Day In Paradise.  We printed the same traditional black & white images that were used in her tutorial.

I decided to follow Lisa Sweet’s prompting and only create 12 candles since the 12th station is when Jesus dies on the cross.
….we only have 12 candles, because Jesus dies in the 12th station and the Light goes out of the world. Dad does the last 2 stations with a flashlight and the rest of us in the dark. ~ Lisa Sweet comment on Catholic Icing

I found the votive candles in a set of 12 at Wal-Mart for $6.

Rose used Mod Podge to adhere the printed stations to the glass votive.  She applied a couple of layers over the image to properly seal it to the votive candle.

We are all looking forward to using these candles on First Friday for Stations of the Cross in our home.
