JOYfilledfamily-homeschool planning

Homeschool planning is in full force in our home.  We start our homeschooling year with a novena, thanks to the wise counsel of a holy Priest and the prompting of a veteran homeschooling friend.

The novena starts July 22 and ends on July 30, the eve of the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola.   It can also begin on July 23 and end on his feastday, July 31.

YOU’RE INVITED TO JOIN US!

Let us form a communion of prayer to discern God’s will, Glorify God, and raise one another up.

It seems that no matter, how many years one has been at this, the balancing of interests and needs of our families, while ever-changing never gets any clearer or even any easier.   Each year we are faced with decisions about our children’s education, what grade, what subjects, what books along with trying to fit into a 24 hour day all the other things we do that are necessary to keeping our homes, like laundry, dishes, etc.  We wonder how many outside activities we can reasonably take on, what to make sure we include and what we may have to omit.  In the end each of us desires to do the Will of God, for ourselves and for our families, each and every member.  The desire to do His Will does not necessarily always translate though into a clear understanding at all times what exactly His Will may be and so we try very hard to balance all the decisions that our multi-faceted vocation entails and discern what He is really asking us to do.  ~G.M.

Supplies:

  • tin can (coffee can) – recycled
  • blue spray paint – $3
  • white contact paper (a roll can be found in the kitchen dept. of the store) – $5
  • white plastic table cloth (you can get enough strips out of ea. table cloth to make 16 windsocks) – $1
  • red plastic table cloth – $1
  • nail and hammer
  • twine
  • star craft cutter (purchased at JoAnns with a 50% off coupon and teacher’s discount) – $6
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • hot glue gun or permanent adhesive tape (1 role of tape covered 16 cans)  –  $3.50

Girls Retreat 6.20

Instructions:

  1. wash the inside of the tin can
  2. strip the wrapping off the coffee can
  3. punch two hole in the top of the coffee can with a nail and hammer
  4. spray paint the coffee can blue
  5. cut 4 strips* of white table cloth.  keep the table cloth folded as it was in the package when cutting.  use a standard ruler as your guide for the width.  keep the cut strips folded once at the top.  the strip should be 26 in long and about 1.25 in. wide.  this long length looks nice blowing in the wind but also comes in handy if the children assemble their windsocks unevenly and a trimming is in order.
  6. cut 4 strips of red table cloth.  (follow the above details)
  7. punch stars on the contact paper.  be certain to rest the punch on a hard surface so that you get a clean cut star.
  8. tie twine through the holes on the top of the can
  9. adhere stars as desired
  10. run the adhesive bond tape along the inside bottom of the can.
  11. adhere the strips of white and red table cloth along the adhesive, alternating colors.  be sure to put the folded part of the strip on the adhesive.  this will allow the strips to open in the wind and give a fuller look to your windsock.
  12. hang your windsock

*4 strips of ea. colored worked for my small coffee can.  your number may vary.

St. Anne

SAINT ANNE
Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary

July 26

Traditional Calendar:  St. Ann (St. Joachim’s feast day is celebrated on August 16.)  – New Calendar: Memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary

DOUBLE, SECOND CLASS / WHITE
Anne and Joachim, her husband, were both of the royal house of David. They served God continually in prayer and good works, but were looked down upon by the Jews because they were childless. At length God gave them a daughter, who was to become the mother of His own divine son. Because St. Anne devoted herself ceaselessly to educating her child in innocence and sanctity, she is patron of all Christian mothers. St. Paul says that it is by a holy exercise of their parenthood that parents are to be saved (Col. 3:18-21).

Family Prayer on the Feast of St. Anne

Father:   We all rejoice in the Lord,
As we keep holiday in honor of blessed Anne,
Of her whose feast fills angels with joy,
And sets them praising the Son of God.

All:      Amen.

Father:   Spotless Anna, Juda’s glory,
Through the Church from East to West
          Every tongue proclaims thy praises,
          Holy Mary’s mother blessed.

All:      From thy stem in beauty budded
          Ancient Jesse’s mystic rod;
Birth from thee received the Mother
Of the almighty Son of God

Father: Let us pray. O God, You were pleased to bestow Your grace
upon Anne so that she might fitly become the mother of her who
was to bear Your only-begotten Son; grant that we who keep her
feast will be helped by her protection. Through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen. Christ conquers, Christ reigns!

Prayer to St. Anne

Prayer to obtain special favors through the intercession of St. Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, the mother of Mary. Her feast is July 26.

Glorious St. Anne, filled with compassion for those who invoke thee, and with love for those who suffer, heavily laden with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at thy feet and humbly beg of thee to take the present affair which I recommend to thee under thy special protection.

Vouchsafe to recommend it to thy Daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and lay it before the throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Cease not to intercede for me until my request is granted. Above all, obtain for me the grace of one day beholding my God face to face, and with thee and Mary and all the saints, praising and blessing Him to all eternity.

Good St. Anne, mother of her Who is our Life, our Sweetness and our Hope, pray to her for us, and obtain our request. (3 times).

SAINT MARY MAGDALEN
Penitent

July 22 Traditional: St. Mary Magdalene, penitent ~ New: Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene

DOUBLE / WHITE
Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, wasted the great beauty that God had given her in a life of sin, but one day she saw Christ and was touched by grace. On the day of Our Lord’s crucifixion, she stood with the Mother of Jesus at the foot of the cross. At early dawn on the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalen and other women who had ministered to Jesus went to the Lord’s sepulcher. Two angels said to them, "He is not here, but is risen. . . . Go, tell his disciples." Mary Magdalen ran to tell the Apostles what she had seen and heard. Then Peter and John, hastening to the sepulcher, saw and believed.
