Home Organization

March 30, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Home, Lent, Organization 4 Comments

It was part of our Lenten program, to have a Father over for dinner and to entertain friends that we have not seen in some time.  We hadn’t planned to have them all in the same visit.

One priest turned into two priests plus Sweetie’s Godfamily with five children.

Needless to say, we had a surge in our Lenten cleaning.

The pressure was on. We had less than a week’s notice.  And if that weren’t enough, Rose, my #1 helper was miserably ill.

Praise God, we were able to persevere.  With a couple of all nighters and a scurry in the eleventh hour, the house was ready for our special guests.

We are just about 50% done with our entire Lenten cleaning.

Here’s a peek at some of our progress, minus the before pictures. Let’s just say, I’m still working on humility.  : )

I have also been watching some great Women of Grace episodes on the topic of organization.  I listed the links below.

Women of Grace Shows on Organization:

Possessed by the Mess: Clean Up and Clean Out with guest Dale O’Leary – Some time ago we aired a program called “Saver, Collector, Hoarder – Which One Are You?” The viewer response was overwhelming and we just knew it was important to revisit this topic in more detail. Our guest is going to tell us why saving is not a virtue, and why, in fact, it could be detrimental to your soul. But she is also going to give us a four step spiritual approach to cleaning up and cleaning out.

Getting Organized and Staying that Way – Getting organized is one thing. Staying that way is quite another. How do we put our homes in right order and maintain a predictable environment for our family – one that yields security, hominess, comfort, and peace? Today’s guest has the answers for us. She is a professional organizer who has helped many people find the way to the joy that comes from a well-ordered home.

Here is an examination of Conscience for home cleaning, created by Dale O’Leary.

Possessed by the Mess

Getting the Heart Ready to Unload the House

Step 1: Examination of Conscience

  • Have I desired things that I didn’t really need?
  • Have I bought items I’ve never used?
  • Have I coveted things that belong to another?
  • Have I envied those who have more than me?
  • Do I trust God to meet my needs?
  • Have I failed to return items I have borrowed?

Whenever you begin any good work you should first of all make a most pressing appeal to Christ our Lord to bring it to perfection.  ~ St. Benedict

SIMPLIFY

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” ~ Luke 13:15

Simplifying is a constant theme in my family’s journey.

Simplify is another prompting from the Holy Ghost that has been placed on our hearts.  We are a work in progress but definitely feel the call to SIMPLIFY in ALL areas of our lives – words, material possessions, food, extracurricular activities, spiritual practices……to better follow Him.

Simplify~Repair~Love

In the past years, I’ve followed the  Archdiocese of Cincinnati – 40days 40bags.  I was introduced to this great Lenten challenge by Jessica.

I wanted to step it up this Lent.  A couple of friends and I are following the Simple Mom’s Project Simplify.  I’ve been following Tsh throughout the year via her site and book, Organized Simplicity.

I’m also slowly digesting Addicted to Stuff! to help me in my efforts.  I pray for perseverance and resolve to gain the order that God wills for my family.

We call races and generations Houses; and the Hebrews were wont to speak of the birth of children as “the building up of the house;” as it is written of the Jewish midwives in Egypt, that the Lord “made them houses;”  Exod. i. 21. whereby we learn that a good house is not reared so much by the accumulation of worldly goods, as by the bringing up of children in the ways of holiness and of God; and to this end no labour or trouble must be spared, for children are the crown of their parents. ~ St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life (3.38)

I may post pictures of this journey if I’m up for the exercise in humility.

O most Blessed Virgin Mary, help me!

Prayer for the Home
Visit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let Thy holy Angels dwell herein, to preserve us in peace; and let Thy blessing be upon us forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

One Sink At A Time

December 13, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Advent, Home, Organization 1 Comment

I have been somewhat overwhelmed since having our newest blessing.  My home has been a reflection of my state.  Nonetheless, I am determined to follow His prompting to regain order during this Advent season, one sink at a time.

Like Mother, Like Daughter is hosting a Kitchen Sink Linky Party.  Thank you Auntie Leila for the gentle prompting.

Preparing my soul and my home for the coming of Christ.

Crafting for FREE!

April 15, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Crafts, Organization 7 Comments

I did a quick craft today while the kids were upstairs doing this…..

I purged during my Lenten cleaning but there were some items I held onto in the case of “what-if.” This was one of those items, a spinning spice rack.

I purchased this about 4 years ago from Costco and barley used it. I tried to give it away to two homes. I didn’t have any takers.

It sat at my kitchen island for about 2 weeks. Finally, I had an epiphany as I was going through my glass tile stuff .

this is how my craft storage usually looks

I decided to keep the spice rack and turn it into a craft caddy for my glass tile necklace supplies.

I dumped the old spices and soaked the containers for days. I began to use the caddy for my tile storage but did not complete the decoration process.

I thought I would wait until I took a trip to a craft store for cute paper. Needless to say, I never made it and am no longer enthused about spending money for stuff thanks to one of my Lenten sacrifices.

I found left over paper from this project and decided to get her done. Thanks, Amy for your promptings.

Supplies: decorative paper, Mod Podge, scissors, foam brush, nail file
this is a bonus….a little helper!

1. Trace lid onto decorative paper

2. Fold and cut traced area for the number of cutouts needed

3. Brush a light coat of Mod Podge on the top of the lid

4. Adhere the decorative cut out

5. File the edges around the lid for a clean look (This is my favorite step. It gives the project a custom look.)

6. Brush a light coat of Mod Podge over the decorative paper

You can repeat step six as many times as you like.

Here’s the finished project.

…Well, not really but majority of the hard work is complete.  It was an improvement from last year.  For that, I’m thankful!
