At Home Hair Cuts

August 23, 2012 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: GFG, New Look

7.21.12

The girls were due for another hair donation.  The deal was that they could get their haircut after swim season.  I find that it’s easier to magically maneuver thick long hair into a swim cap than to expect the swim cap to hold thick short hair.  Anyway, the time had come but I kept putting off the haircuts because the budget was too tight to justify such an expense.

Cutting their hair did not seem to be an option since I have only found one hair dresser who can properly cut our thick hair.  Not wanting to disappoint, I sought an alternative.  I found the CreaClip.  It’s price was slightly under what one hair cut for the girls would cost me.  Dad approved.

The CreaClip arrived shortly after I had ordered and it sat on the counter for about a week.  I said to the girls that I had to wait until I had my energy back but I think it was really more a matter of gaining courage to chop their hair on my own.  I watched online tutorials almost everyday to gain confidence.

Finally, I found enough energy to pop out of bed.  We were all still in our PJs.  Rose helped prep the kids since Dad was away.  I started with Dragonfly.  We all favor his curls so I usually scissor cut his hair.  This wasn’t much of a deviation for him.  He’s a trooper as long as he gets his lollipop.

Papi was next.  That was a BIG mistake.  He doesn’t have the patience to sit long enough for me to work my way through his massive head of thick hair.  He also has a real aversion to cut hair on his skin.  I’ve yet to find a covering that works for him.  I think I’ll stick to the trimmers when it comes to Papi and be certain to wait for reinforcement to be present.

By this time I was ready to hop back into bed.  The girls were not having it so I carried on.  Dad arrived home and was surprised that I started without cleaning up myself or the girls and had not taken one pic.  So he did what any blogger’s husband would do, grabbed his cell phone and started snapping away.  (Side note, most of pics these days come from either Dad or Sparkles.  Both are bloggers at heart.)

Sparkles wanted to be first.  I was hesitant since she is very meticulous about her hair.  I had to prep her about perfection on this earth.  She understood were I was going with my talk and consented to move forward with the much anticipated cut.  She opted for an a-line bob.

Sparkles quickly filled the seat.  She chose to have a slightly longer cut since she had enough to yield the donation without going above the shoulders.  Her style of choice was a long straight bob cut.

Both girls were thrilled with their new cuts.  That’s the benefit of making them wait so long for a hair cut, it doesn’t take much to please them.

I was on a roll and found my next guinea pig willing participant, Rose.  I ended up only trimming and layering her hair.  She too, was happy with the results.  I later turned the scissors on myself.  I needed a could cleaning up.  Dad was the overseeing stylist, keeping me in check so that I didn’t get carried away.  (The hair cutting rule applies to me, too.)  I loved being able to trim up my own hair at home without an expense.

Overall the CreaClip did it’s job.  If anything, it provided me with the courage to attempt the girl’s hair cutting at home.  Patience and some skill is still required to get the desired look.

She Did It Again

August 11, 2011 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: New Look, Rose

Dad and I set a precedent in our home in regards to the girl’s hair.  This year we left the decision up to Rose.  After all, she is sixteen and it’s about time that she starts standing for her own convictions.

I scheduled a long overdue hair cut for Rose and myself.  I had a coupon, of course.  Rose had expressed interest in going short but I never was able to discuss styles with her.before pic of rose

When we arrived at the salon, she insisted that I go first.  I knew that I was not going to take off major inches.  I’m not ready for short and gray hair.  Long and gray, maybe, but not short and gray-at least not now.

Rose prayerfully scanned the very immodest magazines and couldn’t find a suitable haircut.  I pulled some images on my phone and she immediately honed in to a simple style.  (I’ve since discovered that it’s very similar to her last hair cut.)

She shared the style with the stylist and informed her that she needed to make a ponytail and take off at least 10 inches.  She looked at me with a smile—ALL FOR!

hair donation

Rose is officially a hair donor. She has been blessed with the ability to grow beautiful thick hair and is willing to endure it’s weight on hot summer days so that another young girl can be blessed.   The ponytail will be shipped this week to Locks of Love.

God, in His infinite wisdom, endowed the maiden
with beauty and power to please. He desires to
teach her that, as she was externally adorned with
beauty, she ought to beware lest her soul should not correspond to her physical attractiveness, but be, on the contrary, a wild and desert place. Your
external charms should be a mirror in which the
beauty of your soul is reflected.

New Look For A Sweet Girl

June 30, 2010 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Girls, New Look

Sweetie joined the club.  It was our plan to wait until she was six years old for her first hair cut & donation just as Sparkles had done last year.  However, I broke down.  Her hair was past her bottom (when  wet).  It was becoming easily tangled and drying out from all the summer swimming.  She was ready!

Sweetie loves her new hair and will even fix her hair with a bow without my prompting.

Hair Detachment

August 14, 2009 by Lena {JOYfilledfamily} Filed Under: Girls, New Look

This post is past due (as many of my additions). My girls and I have been blessed with thick hair that grows at rapid pace. As I was younger, I despised my long, thick and heavy hair. My father would not let me cut my hair until I was older or at least, when my sister was old enough. I was about 10 years old when I had my first real haircut. Even then, it was still long.

I became attached to my hair. I would style my hair every morning before school, which meant I would have to wake up by 5am to catch the bus at 7am. My hair takes about an hour to dry. My hair routine normally included drying and curling. This regime continued through high school and somewhat into college. I soon discovered the world of hair coloring. It started with the do it yourself kits and grew to the expensive salon treatments. I would justify my time in the salon and expenses by saying I deserved it and rationalizing it since I only did it 2-3 a year. I knew that the pleasure I was getting from my hair was fleeting and more was desired of me. I also knew that my financial resources would be better spent on other causes.  I heard God calling me to detach,  My hair was the first real step that I took in the way of detachment. (I was in my mid twenties.)

This call was confirmed about 5 years ago when I heard Mother Mary Elizabeth speak at a Women of Grace Conference. Mother Mary Elizabeth was a late vocation whom was widowed with grown children. She spoke of how women are becoming so consumed with their appearance. She cited all the lengths that women go to; hair coloring, teeth whitening, excessive exercise and etc… Mother Mary Elizabeth pondered if God would even recognize us when/if we reached Heaven. She also concerned herself with the fact that many women spend numerous hours in the hair/nail salons and gyms focusing on their appearance but fail to spend adequate time on their soul (i.e; in prayer or at church). Her words were not profound but convicted me nonetheless.

I sought my DH’s counsel and together we decided that I would no longer spend time and money on superfluous hair treatments. I would continue to grow my hair only for donation. All haircuts would be simple for function only and I would not seek out the trendy hairstyles. Our girls would also follow suit. It’s not the answer I was looking for. I could deal with long hair and simple haircuts but no hair dying?!? I knew I would have difficulty with this once I started to get gray hair. I started praying for the graces to endure all and even embrace every gray hair as Mother Mary Elizabeth recommended–a crown of glory, one step closer to Our Heavenly Father & Home.

Since then I have donated my hair twice and my eldest, Rose, has donated her hair once. Early in April, Sparkles informed us that she was ready to donate her hair. She turned six in May. Both Rose (14) and I were ready for another donation. We each had 13+ inches to donate. My DH agreed that Sparkles could have her first donation/haircut.

Sweetie will wait until she is six to donate/cut her hair. Hopefully, she’ll stop giving herself haircuts so she’ll have hair left to donate.Papi will never have enough hair to donate but he had his “1st….” buzz cut.

(My gray hairs are coming and I’m still praying for the graces to endure and offer it up.)
